Do i need to go to the tax office when taxing car for first time?

Hi Recently bought a used car, received the log book yesterday with the registration changed over to my name, the tax on the car expires at the end of the month..do i need to go the tax office to renew it since its the first time the car is being taxed under my name?? Thanks

That or post it, can't do it online unless you have changed it in time for them to send the notice for online renewal to you rather than the previous owner
