Car off road - now selling it - tax issue?

    Hi folks,

I have just returned from Australia after approx 1.5 years away.

My car has been off the road and in storage (in a garage) for this time. Since I came back I wish to sell my car and have an interested party.

My issue is since I've been away (I left in August 08 and this was the month the tax expired and not renewed) - when I sell the car and the new owner wishes to tax the car - do I need to provide proof for them (such as a stamped form from a Garda station) stating my car was off the road for the period it was or is it not an issue when I sell the car?

Apologies if I have not been clear...

The new owner will just have to pop into a garda station and get them to stamp and sign the motor tax forum to confirm it was off the road, it's never a problem, just big smiles at the garda from the new owner and he'll be fine, nothing you need to worry about..

It's not an issue for the buyer, as they are only liable from the day they buy the car.

nah, doesn't matter. The new owner will only be liable for the tax from the day the car goes into their name, so if they buy after feb 1st, then they'll only be liable to tax from feb 2010, no matter when the car was put off the road

Just to be pendantic (CharlieCroker has pretty much said this), but the new owner is liable for the tax from the 1st day of the month that it's in their name; not from the day they bought it.

I've bought a couple of cars with outstanding tax and never had to get anything stamped. I just filled in the standard form on www.motortax.ie and it's all been fine.
