17 and looking for a 1.8? You will pay alot for insurance to be honest. I started in a Fiat Punto 1.2 and had to pay alot and i started at 22. Not a bad little car but you seem like a guy that is more enthusiastic about cars than i was considering you already have your full licence at 17 and have your ideal car picked out already :)

No offence but unless you have twice your budget for insurance the silly answers might be your only options unfortunately.

Maybe a Seat Ibiza or a Polo (only because they don't look to girly). Fiesta 1.25 zetec is a great car. Plenty of pep for its size too

    +1, I think i'd actually prefer one to a 1.8 Escort.

I doubt you'll get a quote on anything above 1.4l and like the others I'd go with a good fiesta 1.25.

My cousin had a '98 model...was a hoot to drive and as realible as you could get.

The funny thing I noticed when I was getting insured for the first time was that the type of car didn't really matter within reason. You just pay a ridiculously high premium. I went from an '82 Datsun Cherry to a '03 1.9TDi Passat and the extra cost was about €100.

You are going to find it seriously hard to pick anything decent up with that type of budget. Specially when you take the insurance into account.

Personally I also started off in a Punto and I'm fairly into my car - Despite the head gasket problems the modern day punto are fairly reliable and they are quick cars for something in that range. Mind you I never reached a tonne in her (on a race-track of course). Insurance wise I paid about €2,200 as a 17 year-old in a 1.2!

I got rid of the Punto after about six months and moved to a Cooper JCW and the insurance difference was only an extra €200 for the rest of the year. (i.e. €200 extra for 6 months cover). Which is extremely reasonable when you compare the two.

    Punto 1.2 circa 70BHP
    Mini Cooper JCW 1.6 210BHP

I was lucky to get insured on the Cooper and most companies have them classed as performance cars.

If I was you I'd save up a bit more and look at buying yourself a decent Polo or Golf.

Id be thinking small and robust { vw polo /ford fiesta /opel corsa } you have the license you also need good road sense that takes experience so be careful and best of luck
