Ubuntu also works very well through VMWare Fusion

I virtualize it through Fusion as well but VirtualBox should work pretty well too. What do you need to do with Ubuntu for college? For the vast majority of things, a VM will be more than enough and overall easier to use (no need to reboot all the time, etc).

fusion isnt free, right? wont be running anything hardcore on it. just for relatively simple programming...

although id be tempted to put xp on as well...

Fusion isn't free, no (neither is Parallel Desktop, its' main competition) but it's very good - it normally retails for around €79 but there are regular discounts from various places (typically someone posts about them here).

VirtualBox is not as polished as Fusion or Parallels, but still does a good job and you can't really argue with free so you might want to try that one out first.
