Just a quick question does anyone know of any good insurance for bikes. Or is it just on whatever house insurance you have and cycling Ireland for when you are on the road. My house insurance won't go anywhere near the value of the bike and then want a large excess.

Hooper Dolan in Waterford I think have some kind of special insurance for bikes, probably agreed with Cycling Ireland, which I understand is pretty comprehensive. I think it's costly enough (although probably not as costly if something happens to your bike!!).

I have mine named on my house insurance with FBD. Cost about 50 euro extra per year for 5000 euro worth of bikes.

If your bike is on your home insurance it won't be covered for racing or training... It would be covered if it's stolen from your home in a break in or out of your car (assuming it's covered all risks)

Some home insurance policies will cover the bike being stolen from anywhere. But it obviously wouldn't be covered for damage in a crash.

Some do cover any damage, crash or otherwise. There may be a racing exception but what is to say your bike was crashed while racing? I do know I got full bike cost many years back from a genuine non-racing crash, head first into a wall that refused to get out of the way. Not a very expensive bike, it was pounds at the time and around £300. Insurance companies may have got wise to my crash-happy character since.

Thanks for that. Phoned around today. FBD seemed to be the best.

I just heard from a fairly reliable source that Cycling Ireland have arranged a similar policy to what they had on offer last year with a different insurer.

I imagine the exact details will be released by them in the next few weeks.
