    Just a thought

I assume when testing a car from a dealer, they have some kind of group / dealer insurance. But what about buying / selling a car privately?

Everyone has to take the car for a test spin and this must be happening all over th ecountry every day. So what happens if the potential buyer has an accident?

Same as with driving any car, the driver is legally obliged to have insurance. Most people have TP on other cars, which satisfies the law at least, i'd imagine whoever crashes the car should pay for any uninsured damage.

I test drove a private sale GTI at the weekend (and purchased) but on Friday I rang my insurance co just to see what my insurance would go up by if I made the purchase. She said that if I was going to be taking the car for a few hours, I should ring her to transfer policy. Now my own policy allows me to drive others cars and I have TPFT cover anyway, so seeing as I only took it for a 45 min or so spin, with the owner there, I didn't bother changing.

yep... you crash a car that you are test driving... then its up to you to pay... on private sales anyway.. as to dealers, always best to check their policies before taking a test drive...
