It may sound like a stupid question, but what are dedicated servers?

Instead of one person hosting a game, a "dedicated" server does...

It means if one person leaves, the whole team isnt kicked out, plus you could potentially stay in a lobby all night without it crashing / kicking you

Shame IWnet decided that some mongoloid in romania on a 512k connection should be the host for 99.95% of all games :(

A dedicated server is a host machine which only hosts the game and relays player movements and inputs to each other. Its not bogged down by trying to render and display graphical data, its generally placed on a fast server which is far better at processing data/multiple connections then a home pc or xbox360 and is nearly always set up by a company which is based close or near to a ISP hub allowing for near unlimited internet bandwidth and extremely low latency's.

It allows for a better multi-player experience allowing things like larger player numbers, stable constant low latency connections and local administration. They were born out of a need and necessity for online gaming over the years. And are being removed from use far before their time is up.
