problems with new dentures

I recently had a full upper plate of dentures and a plate also at the bottom sides, I only have six lower teeth remaining at the lower front.

I had an immediate denture for six months and I now have the real thing, which apart from a few sore spots at the beginning is a good fit and looks well, (though I feel that when I smile not enough tooth is showing ), the lower plate is held in place with two clips at the front which fit over my own teeth, and a bar at the back of the six teeth.
This plate is comfortable too and I am getting used to wearing them both.

Now to the problem I have and that is that my top lip is very sore and seems to hang over the dentures, I have given this nearly six weeks and it still does not seem to be getting any better .
Would like to know if anyone has had this trouble and does it clear up and go away , Thank You

You need to return to the dentist for a minor adjustment. Very common problem and very easily fixed.
I am happy to hear you have sorted out your dental issues.icon14.gif

    Hi There
Thank you for your reply I was going to pm you to let you know how I was getting along,

I wore the immediate denture for 6 months , this I made somewhat comfortable by using adhesive.
I lost the remaining back two lower teeth and was very uncomfortable at that stage, naturally food was a problem , I seemed to have been living on soft baby like foods.
But now as I mentioned I have the real thing, at first I thought it was like a block in my mouth and I had a severe gagging problem but all of this passed .
I then got the lower denture which I was dreading and I am really amazed at how well it fits and the clips have somehow helped the remaining six teeth to feel more secure.
It is great to have a full mouth of teeth again and I am taking the chewing easy but it is getting better.

I have been back to the dentist re the sore lips, he said he may be a vitamin deficiency , I have lost a lot of weight and am now on Nutricia Fortijuce and Forticreme.

I am just left with the problem of the sore upper lip, it feels like there is a blister in the middle and the inside is very sore and red, I did have problems with the side of my mouth splitting but that too has passed.
My dentist says to give this time and use Vaseline, this gets worse as the day goes on. My top lip does "hang" over the teeth.

I have made an appointment but as I am nosey what adjustment will cure this problem ?

Immediate dentures tend not to have buccal flanges under the upper lip, the new flange may be pinching a little bit. Just need a denture ease take about 10 minutes. Glad to hear you got sorted in the end.

I knew I spoke too soon saying how great they fitted, removed the lower plate after dinner to clean it and one of the clips broke off !!!!

I suppose you know the clips they are like a "Y" turned sideways
I take it this will have to be sent away now to be fixed.

I have noticed that the clips strain after I remove that plate and I have to ease it back , perhaps this is why it broke ?

So back to himself in the morning

Is the bottom denture a chrome cobalt denture with a large metal skeleton or a mostly pink plastic denture with some little metal clasps????

God I dont like the sound of this ................ it is a mostly pink plastic denture with some little metal clasps ......... is this bad ??

The clasps are stainless steel and a bit prone to fracture if they are in a deep undercut on a tooth (think paperclip being bent). A new one can be put in but the denture will have to go away to be fixed for a day or two. A chrome denture is made of a stronger metal with thicker more flexable clasps, much superior, perfect fit to the remaining teeth, but more expensive and time consuming to make. I will post picture of the difference

Well I saw my dentist today, the lower plate is gone to be fixed (for the clips to be repaired) only trouble now is the lower six front teeth which are very loose are agony, I have very bad pain from two of them.

I cannot believe that nearly a year after trying to solve this problem that I have pain again ,

Should I have these six out ?? my dentist says they will have to be taken out at some point , the gums are receding etc ..........

    :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Wow the dentist was very angry, not at me but at the fact that the clip broke after a week, he is taking an impression on Tuesday and is going to get a different type of clip put on.

He also made some adjustment to the top plate and it has made such a difference to my top lip, I can feel it getting better already, :)
The pain is ok with the pain killers and he assures me that when the lower plate + clips goes back in it will be a lot better, so I am holding onto those six for a while :)

Thank you for all you help

Sorry to be back again with my problems ! but would appreciate any comments.

I was back at my dentist since my last post and the clip was replaced on the lower plate, when I got it back it really did not fit right at all, so back to the dentist again and he did what he called "agressive" filing down, and thankfully they are fine now , they are comfortable with the clips and with adhesive and I can eat fairly okay with them, of course they feel false I was not under the immpression that they would be THAT comfortable but they are not causing any undue discomfort , at last.

Now to the upper set and I still have the problem with the inside of my lips getting very sore.
Back in Dec 09 my dentist said this looked like a vitamin deficiancy problem so I went to my doctor who put me on high vitamin supplements which I am still taking.

The upper plate fits well and I do not have any sore spots and as with the lower I can eat fairly ok, I do have to use adhesive also.
(Note I use just a little adhesive on both plates, I thought I was using too much and through trial and error I think I may have it right now)

I went back to the dentist again and he said he could not "drop" this plate as I would look like a horse .
So at the moment I have the following problems:

When I talk it looks like I have no upper teeth,
When I smile only a little bit of the teeth are visible.
My upper lip hangs very badly over the upper plate and as the day goes on it gets very sore and my lips are constantly dry.
Also as the day goes on it feels like the upper plate is "sinking up! into my gums.

Even now this morning my upper lip is very sore and it feels like there is a blister in the middle.
It would be great if the swelling improved my lips, however my top lip has all but disappered , my dentist has said this happens.
I realise that dentures do not look natural but I really feel that the teeth are too short ( I hope this makes sense) but correct me if I am wrong, in lay mans terms this plate feels like it is pushed too far up into my mouth.

I know I have to be patient so if I am not giving this enough time just ignore me, but I have seen other denture wearers and when they speak you can see teeth at least, and when they smile and laugh you can see teeth and pink gums .

Sorry this is so long but while I realise it is difficult to comment without seeing I hope that my description will help.

I will take some pictures today and post them ( missing card from camera ! so will put that right today )

    Thank You

Tuom, dentures should absolutely look natural, and be comfortable although the may feel false to you they should not look false to others. Sound like there is a problem with the vertical dimension (this is a technical problem). A reline of the dentures or a new set should sort it. Also you mouth continues to change even after 6 months in immediate dentures.

See what your dentist will do, if not go to a specialist. Dentures are very very difficult to do well.

PS get the pics up here, two of the denture out (top surface and fitting surface) and one of your maximum smile ( with teeth closed together) from the front and the side.
