Better grade higher ron petrol allows engines to make higher bhp figures.

I presume we dont have it here as it would be more expensive and theres no demand for it, although Maxols E5 is now a claimed 99ron which is too bad.

    Jap petrol is 100 - 104 ron

my JDM FTO ran smoother on Maxol E5, fuel economy was increased too.

Some cars have major issues running on lower octane fuel (I'm thinking Subarus)

My ukdm Teg runs better on the E5 too, although economy goes down.

Most N/a cars will have no problem, just lose 5 - 10bhp but turbo cars can have serious trouble

This E5 stuff, is that just Maxol's general fuel? Or is it that 85% Bioethonal stuff?

E5 is available in most Maxol stations. It is 5% ethanol and any car can run on it. Details on where sells it are here http://www.maxol.ie/general-content/e5-stations.html

E85 is only available in a few and is 85% ethanol. The car has to be set up properly (new injectors and map) to run on this.

    About 5- 9 octane points.

The exact answer is here(if you want to get your nerd on):
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

As for the not being as powerful as here that's car dependent, oversimplified and not necessary true.

Can't you add something to the petrol to improve it's octane ?? I'm sure I heard some of the rallying lads on about it.

Sounds like the stuff, I know a lad who rallies a Mk.2 escort and he always adds some sort of stuff like that to the petrol for it, tuned to run on high octane stuff afaik.

Lead replacement for unleaded heads Or Octane boost.

Octane booster is almost useless. The Subaru legacy owners club recommend something a while back that worked.

E5 is usually close enough to 97 octane according to AI auto-sports tests.

Tourmaline works but may kill you plus you would not get your hands on it at the grade or volume you would need as it is a listed hazardous chemical.

Yeah I use the lead replacement myself, that E5 sounds like the stuff. Must make a difference otherwise they wouldn't be using it.

As i said it depends on the car, engine management, Timing , Fueling.
    No simple answer.

I could say yes or no but i wouldn't believe me unless i had dyno sheets as proof.

Lucas Octane booster is supposed to be one of the best but even it seemed to only add around 0.2 - 0.3 ron to a tank full of petrol so at €15 a bottle it expensive stuff!

One device I've heard mentioned is the Broquet Fuel Catalyst, a device that will allow older cars to run on Unleaded
or modern engines designed to run on higher octane fuel to run safely on poor quality or lower ron fuel

    http://www.broquet.co.uk/facts.htm

Found a thread here about it's use in the P1 Impreza to safely run on 95Ron

I've used STP Octane Booster in the past but didn't realise it was useless.
    What's the problem with it?

Could aviation fuel not be used?
    AVGAS is 100 ron.

Its not useless per say I just dont think 0.3 ron increase is worth €15 everytime you fill your tank

I didn't realise that it only boosted the octane level by such a small amount.

My car is still running off the original Japanese setup so it's probably set for 100 ron or so.

I used to be really concerned that running it on 90 ron could destroy the engine but apparently not.
    http://www.supras-ireland.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=729&p=4024&hilit=ecu#p4024

I've had 90 ron in it plenty of times and no harm has been done.
I do try to use E5 which I've heard is 98.2 ron.
If I can't get it I use STP Octane Booster but I think I'll give up on that stuff now.

Not all cars have good knock detection and can back off the timing to prevent detonation.

Its down to the engine management on that make and model.

Some cars will be fine some cars will need a cas or crank sensor retardation or remap.

Forced induction is far more sensitive to knock, pre-ignition and detonation.
