PSP Games

Hey all, I did a search but couldn't find any threads, mainly because 'PSP' is too short a word to search for.

Anyway, I just dusted off my ol' launch PSP which I used for a week, and it has since sat in a cupboard because I thought I lost the charger. Found the charger yesterday when I wasn't even searching for it so thought I'd give it a whirl. Bought myself a 4GB memory stick, downloaded the firmware update and I'm all set to plnge into the world of PSP. There's a few games I've seen recommended over the years but I'm afraid I'm going to miss a couple. I picked up God of War, GTA: Chinatown Wars and Patapon 2 today.

The game I'm most enjoying is Patapon 2 by miles. So I guess the kind of game I'm looking for is one that's uniquely PSP, or at least better suited to the format. I'm rarely away from my PS3 or Xbox so playing God of War on the PSP feels slightly pointless when God of War 3 is on the way or I have similar games in HD a few feet away from me. Well maybe not pointless, but it feels a bit like a waste of the PSP. So I'm just wondering off hand what games would ye recommend I get for it over the next few weeks, months and years?

I have Madden 09 and Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars on my PSP and think both are class.

Well first of let me say I'm so glad you got Patapon 2 - it's just the bee's knees. It's such a great game (and a great improvement upon the original game). It's the PSP game I'm playing the most of lately.

As for uniquely PSP games, if you haven't already, you need to play LocoRoco. LocoRoco 2 is perhaps the best one. You need Lumines and/or Lumines II, the PSP versions are the best. Crush is an excellent puzzle/platformer. Jeanne D'Arc is an great SRPG (not sure if it qualifies as 'uniquely PSP' but I just think that the PSP suits the SRPG genre perfectly, games like Disgaea work so well on it). There's Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, but I'd recommend you play the demo that's available first as it's a bit like marmite. Rock Band Unplugged is a great rhythm game and I'm told is quite like Frequency and Amplitude for the PS2 if that sounds good to you. Killzone: Liberation is very good and plays to the strengths of the PSP as it is a top down shooter.

Then there are the odd games, like Echochrome, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman and Numblast, which I suggest you have a look at some reviews and YouTube videos of and decide if they're your thing. Numblast in particular I think is great (it's on sale on the PSN at the moment as well I think) but I'm not sure how much you like puzzle games.

There are some ports/remakes that I think are great if not superior on the PSP. LittleBigPlanet is great, as is PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe. In fact the PSP is becoming a Tower Defense monster, so if you like those kind of games there are a lot of very high quality ones on the PSP. I think that the PSP WipEout games are excellent, as is Motorstorm PSP.

I'm not sure how you feel about old school RPGs, but like the DS the PSP has a lot of them if you like that sort of thing. Half-Minute Hero looks like great fun.

As for up and coming games I'd look out for, there's Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Persona 3 Portable, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Ys Seven, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, echoshift, The Eye of Judgment Legends and Resident Evil PSP. One Million Tons Barabara has been confirmed for release here as Patchwork Heroes which is another 'uniquely PSP' games worth keeping an eye out for.

The 'minis' games are worth looking into, I have a few of them and they're great for bite-size gaming. Tetris, Fieldrunners, Sudoku, Breakquest and Vempire are on my PSP. There are a few due for release soon, like Alien Zombie Death and Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess which I think look fantastic.

I really need to get Chinatown Wars!

Excellent cool, will defo check out some of those. Patapon is fantastic and it was kinda the game that made me go to the effort of looking for my charger and pricing Memory Sticks and the like every few months or so. Had completely forgetten about Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, had meant to check that out. I would only half pay attention to PSP reviews and news and stuff because I thought I'd never get into it. So there was a few titles that piqued my interest when I first heard of em and I subsequently forgot about.

I'm defo going to pick up Rock band Unplugged I think. I'm a Rock band nut. Played the demo today and really enjoyed it. I have Pixeljunk Monsters on the PS3 and love it so I'll probably pick up the PSP version. Have Echochrome too on PS3, be interested to see how the PSP version works.

I've only played a small bit of GTA Chinatown Wars and already have had more fun with it I think than I did with GTAIV. There's a nice style to it. Can be a bit wonky at times, but it's got some really nice touches and clever ideas in it.

I'll have to Pata Pata Pata Pon down town during the week and pick up a few more games!

Sony should sign you up on their PSP marketing team GP.

That comic is awesome, I'm suprised the OH hasn't showed me that considering I'm always bothering her with all my Pon Pon Pata Pon, Don DoDon DoDon when she's trying to play Dragon Age: Origins. :pac:

I love Rock Band Unplugged so much that I bought it twice so that I could play it on my PSP Go. The selection of DLC tracks is pretty good but they're on hiatus at the moment whilst they sort out the Rock Band Network. I really hope it comes back. :(

Considering the few PM's I've gotten asking about PSP info I'm inclined to agree with you. The PSP is just one of my favourite platforms so I like spreading the love. :pac:

Is Patapon 1 worth getting or should I just get 2?

I'll give you a loan of Patapon considering I'm finished it now so you can have it for a while. I'm playing Patapon 2 on my PSPgo btw. ;)

Picked up Rock Band Unplugged for a tenner today anyway, so well chuffed with that. Downloaded Holy INvasion of Privacy Badman and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories too. Had been very tempted to pick aup a Wii just for Silent Hill as I liked the look of it, so worked out well getting it on PSP.

Stupidly I download Patapon 2 from the Eu Store when it was only 20 dollars on the US Store. Now I have to change accounts through the PS3 when I want to switch between my EU and US games. May just re-buy Patapon from the US Store eventually and just keep logged into that account. Ordered Lumines too so building up a nice little collection already!

Thanks again for the advice, there's still a few others on the list I must get around to getting!
