    Hey guys,

Does anyone else find logging in to the college email through the Outlook webmail service UNBEARABLY slow? Seriously, just to get to the inbox it takes about 5 minutes. Myself and a fellow IT nerd took a look at the page content of the login screen and the amount of redirects that Microsoft have put in it is a joke. But while Outlook is usually slower than the likes of Gmail, it still doesn't usually take this long to load up on a standard connection.

It makes me wonder why the college went with a Microsoft solution instead of Google. The corporate version of Gmail is fantastic in just about every respect :(

5 minutes is definitely a major exaggeration; it takes longer than Hotmail/Gmail for sure but it's not that bad, I do agree that it's exceptionally poor as you can't easily see all of your mail and it regularly takes ages to open another e-mail when you have one open.

I just redirected all college mail so it goes straight into my proper hotmail account...avoiding outlook like the plague

Haha, I take the point but I could never consider Hotmail a "proper" email account. I use my Hotmail account when I register on a website, but that's it. I use Mozilla Thunderbird (an email client like Outlook Express) to aggregate my four email accounts into one screen and the lack of IMAP4 support by Hotmail is a joke, considering other free email providers like Gmail, Yahoo and GMX offer it.

Just for those who don't know what IMAP4 is, it's a way to setup an email account so that when you view it through an email client (like an iPhone or through Thunderbird) it automatically applies any changes in the client to the server. So if I read something on my iPhone mail it'll tell the webmail account that I've read it, instead of seeing "New Mail!".

It's not the speed that bothers me. It's the whole look of the thing. And the fact that mails I've read come up as unread the next time I log in. Hate the bloody thing.

Agree, always loads fairly quickly for me, but its such a **** **** ****ty **** **** layout. hate it.

Sounds pretty interesting, though I have to say the main reason I stick with Hotmail for personal use is because I can use it for Windows Live Messenger. Am I mistaken in thinking only hotmail accounts can sign into Windows Live and have their e-mail notifications show up? I'm looking to switch to Ubuntu Netbook Remix so I'll be swapping to a Linux powered alternative for messenger anyway. This is Matt from CompSoc btw :D

I don't have a problem with the speed, but I also think it's

    TOTALLY GAY.

Oh hey Matt, this is your new Vice-Auditor, Aaron :D

I have no idea whether or not it'll inform you of new mail, most likely not. I stopped using WLM a while ago, more so because I found more people online with Facebook Chat and the extra resources WLM used up on my PC wasn't worth the battery-hit...

Outlook (and Hotmail) is by far the most unintuitive and convoluted email service I've ever used. It's all over the place in terms of appearance and ease-of-use. Why can't Microsoft be like Google and realise that sometimes "simpler is better".

Oh and another rant that probably isn't worth making a thread about - what is with the widespread use of Internet Explorer on the PCs? At least if they allowed us to download and use Firefox it would be worth something...

I know, you probably just don't recognise me by name but we combined our powers the other night in grilling the American about his evil educational systems and such like; I'm the newbie OCM/joint Games and Events Co-ordinator haha

+1 for IE being pointless, I think it speaks volumes about the failures of IE and the ignorance of its sponsors and distributors that the people from Firefox have regularly requested that for the sake of consumers that they include FF instead of IE because it's better in every way and they wouldn't expect payment, and they just keep using IE despite its inferiority

It's good training for real life where outlook is ubiquitous.

If you use the IT department computers you can connect your Outlook webmail up to Outlook 2007 (the application). Outlook 2007 is a bit slow opening up but once it's open it's really fast and a lot better (you can do more to change the layout and stuff) than using webmail in my opinion.

Off-topic but the IT computers have gone to **** this semester. Really slow at times and keep disconnecting from the F-Drive.

 Any uni pc I've used has had Firefox on it, are you referring to a particular lab or something?

Oh god, don't get me started. It's worst when you're using the F-Drive for programming labs. Once the system loses sync with the F:\ the entire build process goes haywire.

It's there, it just won't connect. There's a super secret proxy server in place at the college...

We have a problem with NetBeans too in that whenever we use it, we exceed our profile space. You then can't log off, unless you delete some stuff. I couldn't be bothered deleting stuff everytime I use NetBeans so I just manually shut down the computer when logging off haha.

We have it working. Firefox is installed on the F-Drive so if that disconnects, Firefox will crash :(. IE is on the C:\ and works even after a disconnection from the F-Drive...

Aye, things are a bit hairy with the F drive lately. The entire college network (comp. services suites and IT suites) seems to be dodgy for the past few days. Seriously slow, including wi-fi.

No big secret at all! Watch out for the big yellow sheet on (some of) the bulletin boards. The IT lab proxy is cache.it.nuigalway.ie:3128, whereas the main one is proxy.nuigalway.ie:8080. This setting can't be (easily) deployed magically under Firefox as it can under IE.

Also not a fan of Outlook Web What's-It. There are loads of redirects as Microsoft is setting cookies for several different services (third party cookies, no less). It might be less painful to just check the option to remember your auth. details.

Yeah, thanks. KevR sent me the proxy details so it's all good now. The number of redirects is completely daft. I also hate the way every time I login to Hotmail I am sent a cookie(webtrends.com) that makes my spyware programs go nuts.

It's possible to send emails from the iPhone mail for NUIG Mail, just not from the college itself. The supreme overloads that are the Information Services Support have blocked all outgoing SMTP servers, including their own. Smart.

Glad I'm not doing C++ this semester.. I hear it's a complete joke for 1st year Mechanicals, what with needing to use their own laptops and sharing it with one other person for the labs.

If I continue ranting I may not stop. It would be a hell of a lot better next year if they threw out the way they do things on the campus network and introduce something that actually works.

I should see about getting a part-time job..
