I really want to teach but dont know how to go about it. I want to teach in secondary level. I have a Degree in Computer Engineering which was a 5 year course in IT Blanchardstown, I failed a few subjects in 4th year which has brought my GPA down, I dont have a 2.2 and I only currently have 33 points and require at least 41 points to qualify for the post grad in education.

I have been recently thinking of doing a post grad deploma and then a masters, which would gain me 9 points, can anyone think of any other options for me?

What is the Grad Diploma in Education part time course like in DCU? Is this course enough to teach? Do you still apply to the teachers councle? Do I still require to have points to do this course?

I could really do with someones help and guideance here, as its an important step im taking and want to know all my options

I had a look at the list of degrees that qualify you to teach here and it doesn't look like your degree is there. Have a look anyway because I might be wrong.

If it is not on the list, the first thing you should do is contact the Teaching Council to get your degree recognised.

There isn't much point in pursuing a masters etc unless your degree is recognised by the council. Obviously if you think it's likely that it will be recognised then work away with the masters.

I was under the presumption it would as the same course in DIT is on the list. that being said your right, I should find out first if It qualifies

As far as I am aware this year is the last year that they are allowing additional education to qualify as extra points for the course. An employee in NUIG Educational Dept told me that in October and applications for this year have already been submitted unfortunately

additional education being disallowed?, would that not mean they dont want more educated teachers teaching our kids? Dont you mean they stopped sub teaching to gain points? this was stopped this year?

    HI freekhead,

I was told that additional points for teaching practise will no longer be taken into consideration nor will extra points for other degrees, diplomas or masters that u have done. I was told this will be coming into action for 2011 but will wait to see what happens. Anything to do with the government can often change overnight!

To be honest I think the additional points needed is the least of your worries. There are two Computer Engineering degrees on the recognised qualification list on the Teaching Council website. One of them (Maynooth) qualifies you to teaching Computers and the other (UL) qualifies you to teach Applied Maths and Computers. Even if your degree is recognised by the TC, computers is not an exam subject and is a filler subject on most teachers timetables and Applied Maths is a minority subject not taught in many schools. You would find it hard I reckon to get a job. You don't see jobs advertised for Computers or Applied Maths, they are generally part of a job if advertised at all.

    Eg. Physics, Maths, Applied Maths
    Science, Maths, IT

I don't mean to be so negative but that's the reality.
