My OH and I are planning or going to Germany for a few days soon. We'll be flying in and out of Frankfurt-Hahn, and would like to rent a car to travel around. We're both skint students, so can anyone recommend a cheap company?

I always use these no matter where I go:

AutoEurope are a broker and so compare the prices with many companies. Plus, they reduce your insurance excess to zero. So +1 for going with them.

One other option you might want to check is http://www.sixti.com/cgi-perl/rental/el?language=en. I rented a car through them last time I flew to Frankfurt-Hahn and it was something like €10/day. Really can't beat that. I am a student myself and so I also had to watch the budget :).

sixt (and sixti) are good and if you only have a new full licence you can still rent from them, abeit only the smaller models.
One word of warning. You REALLY have to leave the car back to them no later than the time you specify in the booking.
If you are flying then no doubt this will be no problem anyways.

BTW: Sixt have minis as one of their small cheapo cars so go for that if you can. And seeing as you cant get points in germany you can have some fun with that!!

The cheapest option with Sixti usually is the Smart. But as they don't really have that many Smarts, there is a good chance you might get a free upgrade. This is what happened to me. One thing to keep in mind with Sixti is that the kilometers are not unlimited. You get something like 100km per day included and after that, you pay. It still worked out as the cheapest option for me - but if you plan to cross the entire country in a day, you should look for unlimited kilometers instead :).

Thanks so much for the replies! I found auto-europe myself, and got a quote of €150 for 4 days. I just checked sixti and got a quote of less than €70!
