Dell Laptop Issue

    Hi All,

Hopefully someone can give me some help with this one...

I bought a new Dell for the Missus for Christmas. The surround of the keyboard above the function keys has started to swell in one place, and looks raised.

Has anyone any experience with this kind of issue?

The warranty will still be in place so I'm not worried about cost, but herself is quite worried about sending off the laptop for repair/replacement due to personal information on it. Should she just back everything up and wipe the hard drive clear before sending anything back to Dell?

    Thanks in advance!

if you're worried about private data, do exactly that backup the data and then reset the laptop to it's original settings using system restore. If the casing is starting to bulge etc. it would suggest there is an overheating problem somewhere.

Probably a screw out under the keyboard. Pop the bezel off, take out the keyboard and it could be trapped under it. 2 minute fix.

Some models may have the keyboard screwed in from below so make sure all the screws are tight.

just take the hard drive out if you are sending it back , if it was overheating that much that much that it started to bulge the whole thing would melt  , as another poster said its either a screw - cable or the newer dells are mainly cliped together , take out battery and push down on the area yhats bulging, or post a pic

I didn't think that Dell took laptops in, with me they've always sent engineers out. Wait until you speak with them and they say what they're going to do.

I would definitely call them, just to notify them of the problem.

Yeah it'll most likely be an engineer that they send out. And i'd wait until calling them before doing anything. It sounds odd though, i wouldn't expect that part of the laptop to get extremely hot...

is it the bezel on one of the new studio ones? the bezel has wires underneath that are coming from the LCD, rather tightly squeezed into a groove in the (i think its the right hand side) palmrest underneath the bezel.

to be honest, i'd let the dell tech have a go at this one because:

to get the bezel off, there are three flat screws underneath the battery. then the danger of prising off the bezel is that it can so easily snap! and as for getting it back on again flat? the bezel will already be bent out of shape even if you do manage to flatten out the offending wires! :(

depends on the warranty you buy, if you buy the cheapest ie car collect and return, a courier collects equipment

Didn't know I could buy cheaper warranty. Will certainly ask about it next time. As documented elsewhere, my latest support experience with Dell took over three months and no engineer was ever sent. Next Business Day it was not.

As the other posters have said, since it's a new laptop and fully warrantied, let Dell do it.
