Gorey 3 day

The organisers are restricting entry to the Gorey this year to A2s and A3s only - think there might be a few people on here that were thinking about doing it but will have an A4 license - don't think it's too much hassle to upgrade to A3 though.

Apparently it will be the same for most stage races this year.

Remember you can upgrade yourself from A4 to A3 but to go back down you need to wait until next year at least hand have the application studied but a "licence committee".

Seems reasonable though. If it is to be a true starter/entry/lower level then stages races with A2's is probably not a good idea!

I had ambitions to do the Gorey this year if I thought I was in half decent shape.

I'm now confused about licenses again. You can take out an A3 license if you want to, even if you don't have the points to upgrade?

I'd concentrate on beating that horse first if I were you.

Yes - you can opt for an A3 license without any points.

Shergar is going down. No worries there.

Can you take out any license then? Not that I'd want to, but could I take an A1 out?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think so. I've heard of people applying for an upgrade specifically to get entry in to certain races. Someone else would probably know better than I would though.

As robfowl says, I don't think it's as easy to downgrade once you've moved up.

I see swings and roundabouts here.

For example, there was a bit of complaining about the strength of riders in the A4 category and how it wasn't really just noobs. Perhaps some of the more experienced A4s may upgrade because they'll miss out on Gorey and the like?

I assume your "ten hours a week on the turbo" plan means you'll be one of them? :pac:

I'd imagine so - from what I gather half the usual field of the gorey are down as A4 on the cycling ireland site so once they hear, they'll probably upgrade.

Ha - yeah... that's the plan anyway. We'll see how it goes.

You used to be able to ride S2 races even if you were an S3.

I'm not sure about upgrading to A3 without any points. The assumption being that A4 will be easy for most S3 from last year and they should move up failry quickly.

What are the exact dates for this? I can't see anything on cyclingireland.ie or irishcycling.com, although I haven't looked very hard.

You can ask for an A4 or A3 licence yourself.

Requests for A4's might be rejected.

A2,A1 and A+ licences are obtained by points and merit only ;).

The Tour of Flanders is the easier option Raam ! :)

It snowned one Easter Monday on the Gorey on the way back to Dublin ... was n't forecast either, quelle surprise !
Lots of Frozen riders had to be prised from their bikes at the finish !! :D

Is it possible for non club members to enter this and would there be any "fun" cyclists entering over the weekend? I'm not a member of any club but do duathlons and triathlons so some bike experience (but not pretending it's loads!)
Also, what requirements would there be for entry? (licence and the like)
    Thanks

You can enter as an unattached rider but you must have a Cycling Ireland licence.

With regards to the experience, you will be riding at reasonably high speeds on narrow (and probably broken) roads, together with 200 other cyclists.

The roads are not closed so you will encounter plenty of oncoming traffic and you really have to be aware of what is going on at all times without panicking :-).

If you are not comfourtable riding in a big group at speeds of 50km.hr+ then I would not suggest riding this event.

Don't forget this is also a 3 day event so you will need to be handle that workload as well.

Why not enter some of the early races and see how you get on ?

I raced last season as an S3, which was my first time racing. I completed the Charleville 2-day, without any probs. I had to buy 2, one day CI Licences for the event. The plan was to race as an A4 next season and see how I go.

What is stopping you getting an A3 one day licence for Gorey?

I can't see why they'd give out A3 day licences, was it possible to get an S2 day licence last year?

I decided to follow this up.
Firstly I spent a long long time checking out the cycling Ireland website and could find nothing that really helped (not a great amount of info on it imo).
Then rang the number at the bottom of webpage and got through to a nice lady who advised me that the best thing to do would be to take out annual membership and get my application in early as it sells out pretty quick. 1 day licences are only given out on the day apparently and that would be too late for this particular race.
For non club members like myself that would be €150 for the year.
Race calendar not available yet, will check it out for other races when published and decide then.

    Thanks for the help
