    Anyone here own one?

I'm picking one up in the UK next week and I'm pooing myself with exceitement and fear - not sure which is more dominant.

It's got an impressive full service history and just been through a specialist Level 1 inspection.

Would be interested to know where you get your servicing done. I reckon most of the dealerships deal with next to none of them.

I've checked out the relevant forums and there don't seem to be too many problems with them. They don't drive like they look though apparently.

    Any info welcome.

    Cheers.

There was someone here picked up an 840i last year I think. Matt Simis may have had (has?) an 850 as well.

Best of luck with it, I can understand both emotions, that is like an arranged marriage, could be great, could be a nightmare! Hope it is the former.

There is a guy over on BMW-driver.net with one, he has done a lot of work to his and posted loads of pictures. Good luck with the car, they are real crackers.

I'm almost certain he has a manual 840i. Are you going manual or auto? I wouldn't too impressed at an Inspection I tbh, it's nothing more than a service, parts that are faulty may or may not have been replaced accord to the owner's taste and wallet. Obviously get it inspected. AC Car Sales seem to be good indie BMW specialist but have heard a few negative things about them lately. You're better off with the 850i, apparently the 840i can have bore liner issues but the problem should already be apparent on most cars by now if it's going to cause problems.

    Thanks confab.

It's had a full aircon overhaul and new front discs and pads fitted along with new leccy motor in drivers seat before put up for sale.

I'll get my own pics up when she's back on the sod but here's a teaser..

... off now to get a Noah cover for it.

They did an M3, and 325 Touring and a 635i. That stuff about making a profit selling the cars is all crap though. The only way they could've made a profit would be if Ed China donated his time and workshop for free  The 840/850 is a great idea for WD though.

Whoops. Pre-production copy I saw - it'll be on TV later this year, they buy and restore an 840.

Sounds like fun, I've always liked the look of an 8 series. Hopefully BMW will make one again and go back to their Ultimate Driving Machine philosophy rather than sticking M badges on any old yoke like the X5 or X6 and stop offering stupid low spec poverty spec paddy spec junk like the 316d which are for badge snobs who pay the same as someone who buys an Insignia, Mondeo or Superb with all the gadgets, way more space, a nicer interior and a load more power all so that they can tell their neighbours they have a BMW:rolleyes:.

Ed will probably work all his blood, sweat and tears into the thing and then Mike will sell it for a massive profit of 100 pounds!:pac:

There is an 8 series I always see parked outside a primary school in firhouse picking up the kids I would assume. It's a bronze coloured one and fine looking car to.

There's another boardsie with a CSi but he doesn't post here very often...

*CSis are very rare. Most 850s are either 850i or 850Ci

I think Chris de Burgh bought the first one here. IIRC it was a yellow one and he bought it on the stand at a motor show in Dublin.
There are some interesting looking ones in the window at Frank Keane's on the Naas Road.
Off topic, there's also an R8 (not sure which variant) in the show room at the Audi garage (Sheehan I think) in Naas if you want to have a look at one. Saw my first one at the F1 in Belgium c. 2 years ago and was bowled over.

Any update OP on your one?

I thought WD did an 8 Series. Nearly certain I watched it, and an Irish guy bought it at the end of the show - and subsequently backed out, so it ended up being sold on car and classic afterwards.

yeah - WD did an 840 with the usual silly cosmetic fixes while disregarding Ed's labour in the 'profit' calculation. Some Irish chap bought it. (sorry PD - restating your comment)

Mine is out back right now and I plan on doing a few bits to it over the summer :D

Working on the Lexus has given me a bit more confidence.

edit - a nice 840ci went up on donedeal about an hour ago - no mention of NCT though and didn't see a disc on the window either from what I could see.

Good to see he still has it. Any major issues since you got it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,721 ✭✭✭E39MSport

    No major issues, thanks.
They are a bit of a dark art to work with imo. Quite complicated. Electrics are annoying (in my early one anyway) as each system has its own ECU.
Hot circuits are a drain on the batteries ...

There are shed loads of idiosyncrasies about them.

Love it though. Looking forward to getting back underneath it.

    Engine is awesome :D

Was driving my one last 2 days, awesome as usual. Picking up a diff from an E36 M3 Evo shortly to have it fitted, should be tyre shredding fun.

I also put in bigger fuel injectors from a Ford Truck (yank V8) as I suspected 850CSi's are underfueled at WOT. The dyno will tell!

Little scumbags with their 850CSi's out doing dem rings on the roads..... should be shot! :pac: :p

Nah the biggest injectors would be from a small CC 4pot boosted Jap engines, they need coke can size injectors to feed their wheelbarrow size Turbos. :P
I actually have to customise some 2.5Bar injectors (from a Citroen, slightly different fitting) to get it to cold start ok on the larger CC injectors, they were too rich at cold startups (and presumably WOT). Stock is of course 3.0bar.
