Ok so my friend is in a bit of a pickle at the moment and all help and advice would be greatly appreciated as I personally haven't got a clue.

She moved to England on January 2nd of this year and before leaving rang her insurance company to make sure it was ok to bring her car. They told her it was fine and that she was fully covered.

So she gets the ferry across on the Saturday and unfortunately skids on black ice on the motorway and hits the barrier. The car was not in anyway drivable so she rang her insurance company (120 miles from where she was supposed to be...thankfully someone was able to come get her). Anyway, the insurance company tell her they can do nothing for her until Monday, but gave her the number of a recovery company. Recovery people came and took the car.

On the Monday the insurance company told her that an assessor would be unable to come until the weather cleared. My friend said fair enough but queried if her insurance would be covering the cost of the storage of the car in the recovery yard. They said no. She queried it again and was told that she would have to cover 3 days of the costs. Out of exasperation she agreed. She then asked them about the courtesy car included in her policy. They said that as she is in England they don't have to provide one.

Eventually the assessor arrived and has written off the car. The insurance company have told her that as she is in the UK they only have to give her the UK value of the car and are offering her £1000. She's very unhappy about this as she paid a lot more for the car last year.

Can they do this? She was only in England a few hours when the accident happened, the car is not registered in the UK, and she's not there for very long.

She's a bit stuck and is unsure how to proceed with them.

She told the insurance company she was moving to the UK. Doesn't matter if the accident happened today or in 4 month's time, the car would be compared to the UK values. The insurance company is fulfilling their obligations according to the policy she agreed to. Unfair, but totally above board. Ironically if she hadn't mentioned that she was moving she'd be in a better position.

Well as far as I know she didn't tell them she was moving there. She told them she had to be in the UK for work for the next 2 months or so, asked if her car was covered in the UK and they told her the car would be covered for up to 60 days. (sorry, should have clarified this in the original post) This is not a permanent move for her at all as she doesn't know how long she is needed workwise. No addresses have been changed or anything like that.
