You might be still a little young to get it done but the best advice for you is to go have some consultations first then do a little research around the web, there's a fair few threads here highlighting peoples various experiences with it. Those who have had it and aren't too pleased with the results do tend to shout louder though.

Hi, I've been told by a few different eye docs that there's no point getting lasered untill you're around 26 or 27 because you eyes are still changing on their own but they usualy settle around 25 years old. (My current opticain had a girl in who got lazer for her 16th birthday and was back in in 7 months needing her old perscription again, way too young!) Also there's a risk of loosing sight in the eye if there's impact and if you're set on joining the gardai then there will be a lot of things flying at you.
    Of Topic
My dad's in the gardai, dont know how much research you've put into the job but there's a lot of younger people leaving because they hadn't expected the voilence, attitude of the public, car crashes, suicides the have to go to, etc. Realy dont mean to sound preachy but you'd be suprised what people think the job will be. Anyway best of luck with both :)
