Do they gate off at the Players Theatre? or are the gates at the entrance of Trinity (Pearse, Nassau etc)?

I have to ask why? Is someone already planning on sneaking in? The areas infront of houses 38, 39 and 40 is off limits to ballgoers as that area is the backstage for the main tent

See my helpful outline of the ball area :)

You still can't get in to the east end of campus as far as I know though, even though its not used.

Nope - I happen to live on campus and was curious...

Yeah I'm a resident too, was thinking of asking the exact same question. Can anyone clarify what happens to the people who live in Botany Bay/Rubrics/New Square then? Do you get a free ticket, or residents arm-band? DOes this let you come and go to your room as you please?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 83 ✭✭Alex_Jones

Ah yes... Trinity Ball with no ticket.

I've crashed it on 3 occasions myself. Two years by hiding in an attic. One year, I scaled the gates at the railway bridge on Pearse Street, bribed some hired hand security guard with a tenner and then proceeded to leg it up the laneway behind civil engineering. Had to hide in the corridor of the Pearse Street residence for about 5 mins whilst some security guards went away. Walked up confidently to the narrows and some gimp held the fence open for me (it's amazing what people will do for you when you're well dressed).

Some do, some don't. But smart people can get in free.

The smart thing to do is hang out in House X while the Junior Dean scours House Y. You need to keep your eyes peeled:

    n37301196_30630326_7895.jpg

Then, when that's done, leg it to House Y. Warning, you may get stared out of it by various members of Something Happens:

    n37301196_30630303_242.jpg

But it will be worth it. Go looking for hidden drink. Look carefully:

    n37301196_30630315_4310.jpg

and maybe hang out with Lightspeed Champion and his roadies:

    n37301196_30630318_5282.jpg

But chill out until an opportune time to leave House Y when you're fully dressed. And, like magic, you're in...

    Enjoy :pac::pac::pac:

So if you live in the GMB you're evicted for the night? What if you just plan to "stay in and study"?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,133 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

You need a ticket, if you don't as a resident you will have problems. You will be trapped for the evening and cannot go out with your friends for dinner.

The dynamic duo of Emma and Tony will find you they split into 4 teams and a fifth stands around to catch house swappers, they even pay people to assist in visting rooms and to escort people off site and if they find a resident in a tux and no ticket it won't be such a good night for you if you catch my drift

Freeloaders just jack up the ticket price for the rest of us

There is nothing in the rules of the accomodation against wearing a tux.

Cannot go out? They bar the residences' doors or something?

I'm genuinely interested in how they deal with students who live inside Trinity... if we leave to go have dinner and want to go back to our rooms we can't do that? Where do we stay for the night then?

If you're a resident within the Ball staging area you are entitled to an armband to "gain entry within specified hours...". You won't be allowed into Trinity between 8pm and 2am I think it was. And if you look to get in after 2am you must have an armband and you will be escorted to your room.
You must have an armband if you plan to stay in your room afaik, but once you have an armband you are entitled to go anywhere within the ball area as non-residents don't get armbands.

I lived in Botany last year and New Square the year before and didn't pay into the ball either year. Btw, house swapping is for amateurs! :D

Shenanigans! Ticket prices have nothing to do with how many people get in free. The Ball is a load of pants and overpriced pants at that.

So wait, theres come conflicting stories here! Do you or do you not need a ticket? If J.D. and co are scouring all the rooms then it sounds like you would need one?

But do you need a ticket to get a residents arm band, or what? Surely there nothing stopping ya saying, "well I'm gonna spend the night in my room" and then just hopping out?

And also, whats the story with signing in a guest on the night? Then you could both just whip on a tux whenever the room checks are over?!

All campus residents get an email close to the event in regard to regulations for the ball. Perhaps I should have just posted it first...

    Dear Resident,
The 2009 Trinity Ball will take place on Friday 8th May 2009.
You will appreciate that an event of this size and nature requires extra security procedures. As residents, your co-operation is appreciated in taking part and facilitating this traditional “Trinity Event”. Please familiarise yourself with the following arrangements:

    Registration of Overnight Guests:

No overnight guests are permitted on the night of the Ball except in the case of a resident and their guest who are both attending the Ball.
Residents of the houses within the Ball area must register their guest in the Accommodation Office before noon on Thursday 7th May in order to ensure that their guest’s name appears on the list of guests to be given ID straps.
Residents of other areas of College have until noon on Thursday 7th May to register their guests in the Accommodation Office. Further details on ‘overnight guests’ are available at http://www.tcd.ie/accommodation/StudentsandStaff/Students/.
No late registrations will be facilitated.

    Houses Within the Ball Area (Houses 7-20, 22-26, 28, 30, 33-38, 40):

Residents of these houses who are attending the ball, or residing in College on the night in question, must wear an identification strap.
For those attending the Ball these will be fitted in the Accommodation Office after Ball tickets are being issued.
Any Residents and pre-registered guests* who do not have a strap fitted before the ball may, after entering through Front Gate by ticket, obtain one from Ball officials stationed inside Nassau St. gate on the night of the Ball.
Residents not attending the Ball should get their identification strap from the Accommodation Office on the day of the Ball (9am-5pm).
    Parties and Unauthorised persons:

There will be no permission granted for parties in rooms in College on the night of the Ball.
Bottles, cans or glasses must not be taken out of your rooms into the main Ball area. This is a condition of the Ball insurance.
‘Crashing’ of the Ball is both dishonest and dangerous. Residents attending the ball should be in possession of a ticket.
Persons dishonestly attending the Ball are being subsidised by the majority who have paid for their tickets. Moreover, they create danger to themselves and to others, by neutralising the fire and safety precautions of College, which determine the numbers which can be admitted to the Ball.
The Trinity Week Committee and Senior Dean have worked hard to organise the Ball this year. Those attending dishonestly undermine those efforts.
    Ball tickets are not transferable

    Inspections of Rooms:
A tour of inspection of residential and society rooms within the Ball area will be conducted by the Junior Deans and her assistants after 6 p.m. on the evening of the Ball.
If there is no reply when they knock, they will enter briefly to check that all is well.
If they discover any person in College rooms who is neither a resident therein nor a registered guest the person will be required to leave College and the resident will be liable to the College disciplinary procedures.
For those attending the Ball, Assistant Junior Dean’s will check both wrist bands and Ball tickets.
In the case of those not attending the Ball only wrist bands are required.
Failure to produce both wrist band and ticket by those residents who are registered as having an overnight guest will be considered a disciplinary matter.

    Security:
On a night like this there are obviously higher security risks.
You are strongly advised to close and lock all windows, window shutters and doors
Secure bicycles and other movables. Secure your food etc. if you have a shared kitchen.
Lock your door when you are out for however short a period. Crashers climb to great heights so this applies to all floors.
While College will do all within its power to ensure the smooth running of the event residents have a key role to play in the security of their rooms and the rooms of their fellow students.
General Access to College Friday Afternoon:

On the afternoon of Friday 8th May the Front Gate will be closed from 2pm.
Pedestrian access to College after 2pm. will be by the Nassau Street Gate; students may be asked to identify themselves.
All libraries will be closed from 5pm.
After 6pm there will be no access to or from College Park to the front areas of College for either motor or foot traffic.
The Westland Row perimeter access gate will also be locked from this time.
Residents of Goldsmith Hall wishing to enter the building between 6pm and 6am can do so via the door on Westland Row on production of an ID card and room key.
    Access to Residents:

Residents of Front Square, Botany Bay, Library Square and New Square wishing to exit or return to College between 6pm and 9pm. must do so by the Nassau St. gate.
Residents from Pearse Street wishing to exit or return to College between 6pm and 9pm can do so via the Lincoln Place gate.
All residents must produce student ID cards and room keys.

    Residents not attending the Ball:

From 9pm, once the Ball is under way, there will be no admittance to the College campus except for ticket holders at Front Gate.
After 2am, residents will be again admitted by the Pearse Street and Lincoln Place gates, as appropriate, on production of their ID cards and keys.

Junior Dean & Registrar of Chambers

    April 2009

My previous post still stands(apart form the bits I got wrong about needing a wristband to get in after 2am etc).

Lol at securing the food ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 679 ✭✭✭just-joe

Thats kinda crazy, so according to their rules, if you are a resident, you can't get in between 9pm and 2am? Not that it would matter too much, just make sure not to need to go out... But still, in principal its kinda harsh.

    Ah, nostalgia

Should we rename the thread "How far to the Liathróid gates extend"?

That code would be completely unbreakable.

Can residents in Goldsmith have people in their room say from 6 to 11? obviously not a party as the email clearly states no permission will be granted. More like a study group...

i was under the impression that in your rent contract with the college there is a stipulation regarding the ball, basically saying you cant be in the college during the ball without the ticket...

IIRC, the Junior Dean's definition of a party is any gathering of eight or more people in the one room.

You should be okay. It will be like a normal Friday night in Goldsmith where attendants will let you make a bit of noise up to a certain point. (Unless that attendant is on duty... then eveyones night is ruined :p )

Don't forget that if you want to sing someone in you need to drop the forms to the accommodation office by Thursday afternoon!

Any one have any good sneaking in stories?

Heard about guy hiding in a tree and another about a guy who wore workoveralls and a high vis vest pretended he was working there for the day and then ditched them, he was wearing a tux underneath!
