Hi Marnie, I've hired and interviewed a few buyers over the years, always found (maybe should be nearly always !) that www.iipmm.ie offered best education. Good luck

Finished the IIPMM myself, if you want the piece of paper, go to the classes but TBH purchasing comes natural to everyone and is common sense besides experience in a chosen field.

+1. The best purchasers were like the best salespeople - they were born and brought up that way; they did not learn it by studying for a piece of paper.

-1 to these comments. While I agree the best purchasers, like the best salespeople, have a natural ability, adopting that attitude to what is a professional discipline will not get you anywhere.
But you have to learn the basics, just fancying yourself as a good buyer will not mean you can explain PPV's or do a build/buy analysis, nor allow you to measure the true cost of holding inventory, or the logistical impact of ordering.
Plus in this day and age if you think you can get anything other than an administrative role in a buying department without a qualification you are mistaken.
Doing the course will allow you discover your flair. There are many aspects to materials management, from buying to planning, in small companies and in global positions. Many buyers flip to sales after 5-10 years, but a basic education will be required to get a foot on the ladder. Good luck with it !

Ghost your on the button all right but talking mostly about manufacturing and manufacturing isn`t great in Ireland ATM.

OP I would`nt recommend working in purchasing, it`s a stessfull job, the buck starts and stops with you...just my two pence.

If you want to work in purchasing then the IIPMM qualification is really the qualification you need. If you have a leaning towards production planning then IPICS/APICS is the way to go.

IIPMM is broader as you delve into the legal, costing, negotiation and management aspects of the role.

The IIPMM is now HETAC accredited. They offer an ordinary Degree Level 7 NVQ and honours degree programme Level 8 on the NVQ.

+1 on the stress. Buying roles are extremely stressful so not for the faint hearted or easily upset.

Hi OP, did the IIPMM myself, not through distance learning though, did it 2 nights a week for 3 years. Think its a 2 year night course now though.

You could also try apics, they do their exams by module, so you wouldnt have to do it all at once!
