I knew the library was changing to the automatic door system today, i also new my card would be grand as i got mine updated the last time they tryed (and failed) this door system.

Went up to the door this morning, tryed my card, no response, the man there told me to go get it updated again at the witcard office.

Went into the office where the girl told me my chip was broke and id need a new one and the cost was 20 bucks!! christ sake!

The annoying thing is it worked fine everywhere else(shop etc) and i know this stupid door system will be done away with in a few weeks as its not needed anyway but i need to get into it now, so i had to pay it!!

Did this happen to anyone else?

How long you in the WIT? I believe if you were here X amount of years, the replacement was free.

4 years, but since i lost it in 1st year sometime(and paid for a new one) im not entitled to it!!!
I just think 20 is a bit much, 5 or 10 would be enough its only a piece of plastic and especially since presumably the library will stop that door joke soon anyway

I've still got my original 1st year card and it worked grand there today. Was the chip actually visibly broken in it?

I'd give it a week before something breaks! Those machines cost obscene amounts of money. The problem of non WIT students is really only a issue in the few weeks before the Leaving Cert, the old texts and tests books are usually a giveaway! A few random inspections of WIT cards could have done the job at no extra cost...but this is WIT:D

Yeah there was a few cracks in it, she tried programming it first to no avail

Yeah exactly maybe one of the lads who normally are too busy playing solitaire at the desk can check peoples cards every so often:D

I should have just waited til it breaks but i really needed the library today!

It will likely to remain in place until the remainder of the semester anyway. Seeing as they gave much more notice this time and have two people on each entrance - its very likely its going to be enforced and kept in use for sometime.

As for the fee - iv always felt if the card breaks and its not caused by you then it should be replaced free. The cards should be in fit condition to last the year and if they are breaking easily then the cost should be on the college to replace and not students. Its a daft price anyway.

shouldve gone into the SU Office, its not your fault the chip was broken so they had no right to make you pay for a new one.

at least thats what SU are telling everyone who has problems with the machine.

From my experience - its your tough luck apparently. Never knew the SU could offer any help.

(Thankfully, I got mine replaced free as im here long enough now :p)

yeah i think it was decided around this time last year when they brought it in for the first time.

"you should never have to pay to have your card fixed to be used in the library. if you do, tell us and we will sort it out."

something along those lines anyway, so it might apply.

Yeah im here just as long but its because i replaced it before back in 1st year i think after i lost it (my fault), but i would have expected this time i wouldnt have to pay as it was not my fault it was just due to "natural causes":P (not my fault)

Yeah 20 bones is a bit much, they should be no more then about a fiver but I suppose then people would probably be more careless with them knowing they can get a new one for a fiver.

And as for that stupid door system, it's kinda pointless IMO. It's not as if people from outside the WIT come in that often anyway and as a previous poster said already, a few random checks by the people on the desk for cards would suffice.

The money they spent on it could have been put to better use.....like a new couch/desk/item of furniture for Kieran Byrnes office! :-D

Coz the 1500 reg fee obviously wasnt enough, that dosent cover wit cards, getting exam results, getting lecturers to come to class when there supposed to etc etc :mad:

I dont mind using it to gain entry to the library, but what the hell is the point in having to swipe on the way out!?

I had my card 4 years and had a massive row with the person in the lib over gaining entry, because my card had broken(but worked in shop, card machines etc) so I stormed over to the WIT card place and turns out I was due a free replacement.

We didn't ask for this update to the cards so why should anyone pay? I was fit to kill someone but something actually went my way for once.

What way does it work in other Colleges?

Thats exactly what happened with me but apparantly im not entitled to one because i lost mine in 1st year, fair enough i lost mine it was my fault but but surely everyone is entitled to a free one if it just gives up and stops working.
    I was fuming too!!:mad::mad:

Some joke isn't, another moeny racket, our fees shud enclude at least one replacement card per year.

I hate the people in the WIT card office, really snappy.:pac:

What really worrys me is if you lose your card while in the library. Do you automatically get a library life sentance.....Sorry, no card, no exit:D

In UCC I think it scans the barcode for entry (the same barcode that the librarian scans when you take out a book).

hahaha Imagine, a life in the WIT Lib

Ah cool thanks, I miss being able to use cash in the Spar shop. Other than that the WIT card is grand.

My WIT card miraculously works. Almost the entire laminate has come off with only the barcode intact (no picture, no name, no signature). It's one of the old cards which has the chip on it, welll, was on it - it's long gone. The RFID tag sill works though as I can use the vending machines and the magnetic strip, while split, still works!

Yeah they are actually so ignorant, the day i went in two of them were chattin and she barely even looked up at me, it was a major inconvinience to have to serve me

I refused to pay for mine and got a new one no problem. The WIT insists that the card is the property of WIT and must be returned upon request. Provided that you have not damaged the card (intentionally) then they are obliged to replace the card for access to essential services (i.e. it is not possible to function without a WIT Card as it is required for essential services such as library and exams)

What does it matter if the chip was broken or not? The new cards don't contain a chip.
