I wish to set up my own business setting up a tourist business attracting German tourists to Ireland and vice versa. I also believe setting up a German themed bar in Dublin (similar to the Czech Inn) would be a success after talking to a number of people. I have emailed the German-Irish Chamber of Commerce today. I am a bit unsure how to move forward. I would be much obliged if you can offer any advise/help or downright feedback. Anybody wants to PM pls do

Hi Jan. I am a German Chef with a lot of Concept Experience. I think that this is a fantastic idea. In every major city you find a "German Place". Should it ever materialize give me shout. Regards Oliver

    Hi ,
So what reply did you you get from chamber of commerce? Id imagine they would be helpful as you are trying to attract tourists. The bar trade is struggling at the moment though.....prob not the best time to start out.
Good luck tho.... i think its a good idea

    Hi JanUllrich,
like all good ideas, they need a good sound board to highlight all the "good, bad and ugly" issues that a start up business of this nature needs.

Here are a few issues to consider:

    • USP - Unique Selling Point - What makes your idea different? Is there any competitors or similar? where are they located?
    • Location - Expected Footfall, Can you obtain a Bar/Food licence in that area? What services are you providing - Drink Only, Drink & Food?
    • Premises - Lease, Breakclause would be imperative, will you envisage any alterations to make it more "German", get it surveyed to see that it is up to scratch (Heating, Plumbing, Electrics, Structurally, Kitchen -if you are doing food)
    • Insurance - Premises, Staff, Public, Stock, Keyman
    • Staff - Trustworthy, cost(Normally the biggest cost for any business)
    • Stock - will have to pay COD (cash on delivery), what volume of stock do you intend buying for first 3 months, 6 months, etc.
    • General Overheads - Light & Heat, Telephone, Advertising, IT Costs, etc. - you must forget about these obvious costs
    • Taxes - VAT, if Employees - PAYE/PRSI, if company - Corp Tax.
If you prepare a business plan, it will help you to answer the above and much more. Within the plan should be a CASHFLOW PROJECTION of the income and expenditure of the business for 3 mths/6 mths/1 year/3 years.

    Why do this?
    • Spells out the objectives of the business to you, to potential investors, the banks
    • You may need finance - this will be the main item that will back your business idea
