Some friends and I are considering spending this June and July working on a cruise ship... Are we mad?? Has anyone had any experience of working on a cruise ship? What experience do you need? Is it really tough work? Do you get to spend much time onshore? Thanks!

Contracts on cruise ships would normally be 6/8 months minimum.

One of my friends did a solid 18 months working as a bar man on cruise ships. He absolutely loved it but it definitely doesn't sound like it's for everyone.

If I remember correctly, he worked 8 hours on, 8 hours off. Said it was ok once he got used to it. He liked the people he worked with and he also said it was good for saving as you spent much of your time just working.

I don't know if he spent a lot of time off the ship but he did have a few stories from his time off in Rio so I guess he must have had some down time at points.
