Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for a second hand engine for a 04 Volvo S40? Engine over-heated over Christmas and my mechanic hasn't been able to locate a replacement one as yet. Would cost over 3k to get a new one from volvo so don't fancy that option...

Give www.traynors.co.uk up North a ring, they deliver to the South.

If your car is the MkI S40 most of the engines were either Renault or Mitsubishi. The MkII uses Ford and PSA engines. Might make searching easier.

    Might help, 1.8 petrol

Not the best with cars but it's an alluminium engine which the mechanic said isn't the norm in that model

be aware that there are 2 different 1.8 engines, 1 is Mitsubishi (1834cc), one Renault. (1731cc)

cc will be on the tax disc.

Given the well documented problems with the Mitsubishi GDi engine I would put money on the OP's one being that one.

    +1

I wonder if the Carisma/Pajero Pinin/ engine is identical?

Think it was a bit of self-harm, changed a headlight bulb before christmas and left the water pipe hanging down (which I found out after), the fan belt rubbing against it burst it and when the light came on I assumed it was because of the cold weather and that an extra 30 mile or so on the way home wouldn't do any harm, little did I know...

That's a Renault engine as far as I know, similar to Laguna Mk1.

As previously suggested by bazz www.traynors.biz

Just make sure you tell them which cc engine you need.

I've found they dotn bother replying to their own online enquiries system. I've sent a few off in the last month or so and heard nothing back.

No, that's a 100% Volvo engine. The majority of the S/V40 engines were Volvo except for the GDi (Mitsubishi) and the diesels (Renault).

It must be the Laguna Mk1, as that used one of Volvo's engines for a brief period.
The 40 Series cars were equipped with four-cylinder engines, such as a 1.9 turbo diesel or 1.6 (1588 cc), 1.8 (1731 cc), 2.0T (1948 cc), 1.9 T4 (1855 cc) or 2.0 (1948 cc) fuel-injected gasoline engines all of which are derivatives of the modular whiteblock engine series that started life in the Volvo 960 and carried in both 5 and 6 cyl formats in Volvo's bigger FWD cars. There was also a 1.8 L (1834 cc) Gasoline direct injection engine provided by Mitsubishi as part of the platform sharing between the 40 series and the Carisma.
