Faux Timber Cladding

Folks, I'm building an extension to my house (see 3D model output below). The main house is traditional red brick (downstairs) and render (upstairs). I'm thinking of going for a contrast in materials for the extension, namely stone and timber cladding. But when it comes to cladding I want something that is maintenence free and will not fade. So ideally I want a man-made product. So is there something that fits the bill (and apologies to the traditionalists out there).

You can use cementitious fibreboard (i.e. Hardiboard) but it will look like painted timber, not natural timber. I should be trouble free for 50 years. There is also a plastic/fibre product called earthwood.

There is also a Tegral product made from fibre cement that will also resemble painted wood.

    http://www.tegralbuildingproducts.com/index.php?page=cedral

It's also IAB certified under the name weatherboard.

The tegral product also looks better in the flesh than in the 3d animation on the link SAS supplied.

Thinking of using the same stuff on the side of my shed, at present I have inherited a 15m long x 7m wide structure with unplastered walls for the first 5 feet in height and corrugated galvanised sheeting from there up. Ugly!

soldsold, how did the shed project work out in the end? I'm looking at a similar project to make an ugly concrete rendered shed at the top of my elevated garden a little prettier. Thx

Sorry I didn't get to that job yet, it has been moved to the bottom of the list. As the side that faces the house is the most sheltered, I might put on western red cedar yet, depending on price. The other side is next to my neighbours shed so is well hidden and probably won't need to be done

I just built a small building using Tegral's boards - see pic attached.

I think it's a great product btw. No connection - but I'm glad I could skip the whole plastering thing............ :)

Is it expensive? Looking for an alternative to wood.

Roping in a bit of DIY, it's about €30/m2.

Easy to fit, I did the small bit lately in an evening after work (finished under lights of car ! :D )

So, start with your walls, and batten out.....

    SE602_04940_1.JPG

Add reveals to corner's and ope's (I used 25mm thick cementitious board btw..)
    SE602_05158_1.JPG

'Just' add the pre-painted board.........told you it got dark ! :P

    SE602_05161_1.JPG

    Et, voilá : finished.

    SE602_05165_1.JPG

    SE602_05245_1.JPG

All FYI, no connection, I don't sell it/fit it etc - I bought it from a provider's just like anyone else.

I love not having to paint/sand/stain/preserve it etc.

thats a fine job. I'm planning a new build now and am looking at various finishes. I cannot get a mortgage so I need to keep costs down. For that reason I may look at the normal profiled sheeting
    fibre-cement-sheeting-marley-eternit-500x334.jpg
Presumably the profiled sheeting is the cheapest and quickest (cheapest) to install. Do you if the design you went with was much more expensive? How much was it a piece?

You can put that board onto any material, or on any wall type - block's, timber, SIP, steel-frame - anything.

I have it on a prototype wall I'm testing for a different purpose, based on a pre-finished cementboard........(long story......).

You screw the boards to the batten's, and lap over with the next board, so fixing's are invisible.

Hi guys, am from cork so i'm trying to source the weather board locally, does anybody know where in cork it is sold from? also what is the best material to use behind it? Am I right in saying that the weather board does not keep out the water because the joints are butted together?
P.S I'm building a 18ftX30ft garage, I want to build a timber frame (or similar) and clad it weather board hence my interest.

Well the board I used is from Tegral - so any builders's provider's should be able to get it for you.

Failing that, contact their rep, <no phone numbers on-thread, please> (no connection, it's who I contacted to get mine), or try their website.

thanks galwayt, any idea if i need to get pp for this build? i'm under the impression that if it is a tempory structure then i can go over the permitted 40sqm, My plan is to lay a conc floor/base then errect a timer structure bolting it to the floor etc. the same idea as those steel frame garden sheds

re PP it depends, see here: http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/DevelopmentandHousing/Planning/FileDownLoad,1586,en.pdf

re over the 40m for temporary (without PP): not true

Imho: Id go a step further with your planned construction method: temporary structures often become permanent..

    A garage isn't a temp structure.
Is it atttached to the house, if not the limit is 25 sq.m
