There are those who say the 1.6d has a fair bit of poke. it's all relative.

What are you driving at the moment, for comparison sake

the 1.6d would probably be good enough, the 1.6 petrol isn't that nippy.
Drive them and see I suppose.

Maybe an Alfa 159? You'd pick something nice up for that type of money. There is the reliability stigma but the 159's aren't too bad.

I drove a 2.0D S40 and just didn't feel like there was anything there when you put your foot down.

If you wanted to you could probably pick yourself up a Focus ST for that price. You'd have some serious car for your money and they go like stink! GTI would be another option, again a hell of a lot of car for your money. Both might be a little on the high side of your price range.

What are you looking for in a car?

It wouldn't be Boards.ie without someone suggesting you get an Octavia on the scrappage scheme.

yeh thats good to know about the 2.0 d s40.

I was a fan of golfs till i saw the interior its looks nearly similar to my 99 astra. plus the gti and st in 08 models would be out of my price range.

eh id prob prefer a saloon but not ruling out a hatchback, cheap road tax, doesnt have to be the quickest car in the world but i want something when you put the foot down you feel theres power there.

140 horses or thereabouts, and plenty of torque in a car that size is more than enough. I've driven plenty of Diesel S40's / V50's and the 2.0d isn't what I'd call slow. Never been impressed with the 1.6d (except re-geared in the S80 - it's actually pretty good).

Im getting a 2008 S40 SE 1.8 FFV tomorrow so I will tell you then what I think of that engine.

I've the 1.6d and find it ok. It will win no races and is sluggish from take off, fuel economy is pretty good, getting between 950 and 1000 km from a full tank of diesel. Looking at getting it remapped for better low to mid range power but if I was buying again I would opt for the 2.0d.

1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol engines are Ford engines straight out of the Focus but if buying a 08 I would only consider the petrol engines if I was doing tiny mileage and it was being offered very cheap. The 1.6d only costs €156 to tax per year.

Spec wise, wise you should be going for at least SE trim, it has standard comfy leather seat among other things. If possible you might be lucky and get one with the optional Winter Pack which adds bi-xenon lights, heated seats, etc. SE-Lux is rare enough but adds electric memory seats, upgraded sound system, folding door mirrors, etc.
