Test drive stories

Test driving a car is always interesting. Different handling, performance and state of repair make it a bit of a guessing game sometimes.

I'll go first, even though I wasn't driving - my brother was buying.

Alfa 156: The car looked ropey just sitting there (and I like Alfas). Driving it confirmed the impression. A harsh, crashy ride, and that was in an industrial estate with good roads. Didn't buy. Looking back on it, the wishbone bushings were probably fecked.

E39 520i: Looked lovely but had some unspecified problem that left it with no power. Dealer told the brother to floor it in second. No response from the car. Didn't buy.

VW Bora: When the brother arrived the bonnet was covered in stone chips, the exhaust was billowing blue smoke and the engine sounded... well, odd. Since I didn't go with him on this one I had to insist that he didn't buy it on the phone.

    Anyone got any better stories?

The buddy test drove a Citroen Xantia with the adjustable hight suspension. Set it to the high setting and proceeded to write the car off.
    That is all.
