All your drivers are here on Dell Site

Should have whatever drivers you need there, for XP I imagine?

Many thanks for the suggestion. I'm doing a manual re-boot and would need to install the Comms drivers in order to put the laptop online to Dell's site. I've tried downloading drivers from the site using a PC (not Dell) but can't get that to work. I thought I might be able to download to a memory-stick and transfer the drivers to the laptop.

Your plan should work fine. Once you donwload the individual driver packages, R2342.exe for example, copy those to a usb key, and then onto the target laptop.
Once the you run R2342.exe it will extract the driver to a folder in the C:\ drive called either Dell or Drivers and then a sub-folder of R2342.
There will probably be a setup.exe which you then run and will install the drivers for you. Hopefully that makes some sense!

Yes it does! That worked perfectly once I downloaded .net Framework/Dell Download Manager. So thanks very much again (also for the Moderator's interest).

Just 1 outstanding problem...I can no longer access a website marked 'php'. It comes up as a blank screen. Any thoughts?

    Regards,

    Pat

I would run windows updates and get the system back up to fully patched standards, then install the latest version of Firefox (3.6) and see can you access the PHP website you speak of.
A handy website for reinstalling programs is Filehippo or Ninite.

Brilliant! WIN was already up to date so I just installed Firefox and it worked.

I don't want to keep bothering you and you've been very generous with your time but can I ask just 1 more question? When I turn on the machine, instead of going straight to WIN as it always did, it comes up with a text screen asking me which application I want to connect to. Can I avoid this?

    Many thanks again,

    Pat

Is this when the laptop is booting it gives you a black screen with white text asking to choose between two operating systems and give you a 30 second count down?
Bb457123.f29zs01_big%28en-us,TechNet.10%29.jpg Similar to that picture but with 2 choices and a 30 second countdown?

Or is it something else altogether, like a window that pops up once windows boots completely?

Yes. "Please select the Operating System to start". Then it lists XP twice and there is a 30-sec countdown.

Ok, Let windows boot as normal, wait the 30 seconds etc until you're at your desktop.

    -Click on Start.
-Right Click on the My Computer icon
    -Left Click "Properties"
    -Select the Advanced tab
-On that tab you will see "Startup and Recovery" section, with a "Settings" button, click this
-Where it says "Time to list operating systems = 30 seconds" untick the box.
    -Click OK.
-Close tabs by clicking ok again, and restart the machine, countdown should be gone :)
