    Hey,

All the crap on the roads this winter has frozen up the front derealer on my mountain bike completely, luckily it's frozen in the right position for the comute to work.

If I remove the thing to try free it up will the chain stay on the front ring without the cage?

Chain should stay on grand without derailleur.
You should be able to free it up in situ though. A good spray of wd40 or similar-leave for an hour or two and move derailleur back and forth by hand.
You could take the cable outer off and spray inner with wd as well.
    Best of luck.

Thanks Papac, I tried the wd-40 route with no luck so I took it off in the end; couldn't make any headway with it so chainreaction here I come...

Going against the ethos of this forum and advising not to go directly to CRC just yet.

Had the same problem last year on my road bike. Front derailer got stuck ...

Take a small diameter vessel deep enough to take the derailer in completely and fill with an extremely strong concerntration of degreaser/water or degreaser on its own. 10mins ... rinse .... and repeat if stuck again.

Solved the problem for me and its still working .... obviously relube before it goes on the bike.

spent a while with degreaser and toothpicks etc trying to free the thing up with no luck. Got to love chain reactions free delivery!

    Thanks for all the advice.

I wouldn't remove it, the chain will be less stable. If you do, you need to install a chain watcher. Common in time trials, has cost people in the past.

Pity I didn't see this earlier, I have one of these going grabbing, brand new, never been installed on a bike.
