Going from full time employed to part time

At the moment i am working full time in a field which isnt my industry at all. Im overqualified and boss knows it. Knows im looking for an IT job and hopes i get one.
Now i may be offered a part time (at fist ) job in IT, going to full time (if it works out ). If it was full time right away, id be delighted, but its not, so am hoping my thinking is correct.
If i finish my current job, and take up the part time position for 3 days a week, can i then claim some form of benefit, either jsa or jsb for the remaining 3 days a week?
If this is the case, is there a specific way i need to leave my current employment, ie would i need to be terminated (though not for misconduct etc) or is it ok to simply hand in my notice?

I'll hear back from the job in next few days, but interviewer sounded very position, so trying to plan ahead on what to do.
    thanks
