I was in Cycleways on Parnell St with a similar question, I want to cycle to work (city centre about 10 minutes) and then on weekends go for longer cycles. They reccomended the Specialized Crosstrail Elite. I'm getting it under the bike to work scheme, have you checked this out?

You don't need a suspension on the road. You don't need it off road on easy trails either.

You probably want to get a hybrid. What's your budget? Good ones go from around the €375 mark new.
