Buying laptop from USA

Hello. I was looking for some information about irish customs charges.

I need a new laptop and i am on a limited budget. After looking at the price difference in EU shops and US shops i decided to send my money to a trustworthy friend in USA to buy me a laptop and send it to me. I was completely oblivious to any taxes from packadges until i stumbled upon this "Sure, we could order from the US, but in the end, with shipping and the Customs Office taxes, we would end up paying the same (with a US keyboard)." in a thread about this laptop. Wtf is he talking about? What taxes? How much? WHY? How to reduce or avoid it?

You have to pay import duty on products that come for non EU countries. Small purchases Revenue do not normally bother with but with a laptop they probably would. One way around it is to have your friend post the laptop to you from his address not from the store and label it as a gift. This isn't guaranteed but normally there are no import duties on gifts. If you do a search on www.revenue.ie you will find the details.

This kind of tax is standard practice for most countries. Putting something as valuable and fragile as a laptop through the post is risky though, have you considered what your options would be if it arrived damaged or otherwise faulty? Those shipping costs add up pretty quick...

You can buy a reasonably cheap laptop in this country - e.g.

Might as well just suck it up like the rest of us.

Talk of tax evasion etc is strictly forbidden on all Boards.ie forums. ANd this is not the forum to discuss the reasons for taxes and import duties.
