Alright, it's hard enough to get a job in the current state of affairs and anything that can be done to help would be great! So I'm looking for any ideas to create open source projects and get down to coding straight away!

So any ideas to get stuck into!

I much more of a Java person unfortunately, but I'll willing to change that by getting my head around C/C++/C#

Do you have a specific area of interest? be that hobby or an area you would like to specialise in for work? e.g. games/business/communications.

Once you decide on an area, go to sourceforge.net and search for projects in that area that are java based (since that is your language preference).

Then download the source and have a look.

Check out the project's Bug Reports, on SourceForge, to see if you can find and fix some bugs! Initially you will be required to submit changes as patches (diff files) but once you prove yourself you will be given access to the code repository. Once you make some patches don't expect a big reaction, you might even have to contact some of the bigger players and coax them into reviewing your code and getting them to implement. It depends on the project - some are more organized than others :)

Get involved in the project too - helps with the team aspects of work. Find out what tools they use. See if you might work with others on a task. Check out the "Feature Requests" in the SF project area to find potential small projects.

Those are my tips from someone who is involved with some open source projects.
