Are HP the best?

    Hey all,

Looking for a laptop for my brother - I know what i want normally but for him its a little different. He wants it for accounts, dowloading, films etc - He's not into gaming so i'm thinking Dual Pro and possibly a hp. Are they the best at the minute for decent multi-tasking laptops?

Found this one, HP G61-110SA but thought it was a little steep as it seems to be an older model. Your looking at €500 in PC world or Currys.

Processor Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4300, clocked at 2.1 GHz
Cache memory 1 MB L2 cache
Operating System Windows® 7 Edition Home Premium
    RAM 4 GB
    Screen type Large LCD screen
    Screen resolution Information not provided
    Screen size 15.4"
    Hard drive 320 GB
Optical disk drive SuperMulti dual-layer DVD writer

Is this worth it or would I be better getting a cheaper one? Looked for them online and cant get it anywhere reputiable..

    Any help appreciated!

brand is really more of a personal preference - (some models in)hp,dell, toshiba etc are well known good laptops.

as far as he is a normal user, the spec is fine. and of course intel's T2xxx,T3xxx,T4xxx are the basic standard dual core - if i were you i may take a look if i can find a T6xxx cpu with it, should be few quids more but better performance (at least it has better L2 cache :P)

Dell have an Inspiron with i3-330M for €526, and i5-540M for €576.

Im sure other manufacturers will have similar models in those price ranges also.

They'll have reasonable performance advantages compared to the low-end Pentium Dual and Core2Duo processors. The i3 supports hyperthreading and the i5 supports HT and also turbo boost (a small o/c when conditions allow).

So I would forget about anything with an old-gen CPU unless you were getting it at a great price.

I am a big fan of HP, love their machines. Check out Tesco Direct or Ebuyer.

For me HP is the worst, Dell is the second from the bottom. Whatever I buy, trying to avoid these two by any means. For laptops, Gateway and Acer, followed by Toshiba. Samsung and Sony are Ok but the jury's still out whether they can be recommended. 15 years of being a heavy user.

I bought a HP laptop (DV6095ea) 4 years ago. It was a terrible experience. Now I may have been part of the unlucky few hundred thousand who happened to get one of their duds (HP had to do an extended warranty on a huge number of their dreadfully designed overheating but nice looking laptops) and they did fix it (motherboard replacement on 13 month old laptop) in a hurry but that was really the begining of my problem. Just after the warranty on their repair elapsed I experienced another failure, the cause was a tiny cable (proved by swapping two identical cables and which I could have replaced myself) but they wouldn't give/sell me one. I explained that the cable had clearly been damaged during the motherboard replacement but it didn't matter to them. They wanted me to send the laptop back for a chargeable repair, told me it could cost about €200 to replace a sound module. I told them this was ridiculous (over the course of at least 20 e-mails and long frustrating phone calls) but they would not send/sell me the cable. I never got the cable and I never sent it for repair so for the following 2 years I had to decide between the ability to recharge the battery and sound. I cannot begin to describe the frustration and p***ed offness I felt with their attitude and I will never again buy a HP product. I'd avoid them like the plague if I were you. I have a Dell at the moment, seems ok so far, it's a work one, I'd probably go for an Acer or a Sony if it was my money.
