As usual for aldi laptops, a great spec for the price being paid.

I bought an aldi one almost two years ago now and its still going great :)

I'm not seeing reference to an OS...or the Windows 7 logo. Vista?

I'm not seeing reference to an OS...or the Windows 7 logo. Vista?
it is windows7 and includes a 64bit recovery disc
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium

Sets new standards when it comes to user-friendliness, performance, reliability and security. In addition, the successor to Vista opens up new multimedia opportunities.

(OEM version, 64-bit recovery DVD included with the product)

ITs nothing special TBH. Quite old hardware and a rubbish GPU.

Am I the only one that thinks this isn't that great a deal...

The graphics card is really bad "Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD" You probably couldn't even run older games on medium settings with this.

Even look at dell, for the same price as this you could get a core i5 laptop (Middle one)

I wouldn't be too keen on it either. As you said the graphics are weak, the 1mb cache on the processor is not the best, and I dont like the size and weight of 17" "laptops"

    * and the ram is only DDR2, whereas that DELL you pointed out is DDR3

Any opinions on the Credit Union offer at familycomputers.ie please. I managed to mangle my acer screen. Hinge seized then backing plate for screen broke. Although still working,

I am in the market for a new laptop with an extremely limited budget so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all so much in advance for any help ye can give.

It's a good price for a 17" laptop that can be used for HD playback. The Dell also has a smaller screen and lower resolution.

God, people are so picky in here

Fine then, the first dell here http://ireland.dell.com/ie/en/home/Laptops/studio-1747/pd.aspx?refid=studio-1747&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&ref=lthp

Pretty much the same spec, but a better graphics card :p

I'm not saying that all the dells are better, I'm just trying to say that this isn't that great a deal, if you look hard enough you'll find better

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD this graphic card is really bad.
this laptop is worth 250 euros.

dont buy this you will regret.

check out this one. better specs same money.

3 yea guarantee is pretty good to add to it.

The 3 year guarantee is good. But don't be buying this for it's specs. They're just not good.

I'm not being picky, I was merely giving my opinion based on the laptop prices I've seen. ;)

I wasn't aware the price was that low for the Dell. Given this, I'd, obviously, recommend the Dell over the Medion laptop, based on specs alone.

Regarding graphics capabilities, I think a lot of people forget that the majority of people using laptops won't be playing demanding games that require a dedicated/discrete graphics card and integrated graphics, such as the Intel GMA 4500MHD, would suffice in most cases.

What do you want the laptop for and what model acer was your old one? Do you want a better one or the same or would a netbook do?
If a netbook would do then the one at http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055803716 seems to be good according to the thread, which I started but others here know more than me about computers. But it is not at family computers as far as I know

If its's anything like the desktop supplies there will only be 2 per store so get in early.

my opinion is that this is nothing more than the usual hire purchase sale which is sold as being part of some government initiative. if it were genuine there would be some government office you could ring or contact to get further details!

i am surprised that credit unions have apparently fullly endorsed this product but at the end of the day it benefits them too as they make a lot on interest on the loan they give you.

the computers themselves seem overpriced for what you get and the number of models and specs are very limited and i would think you are probably better off getting a loan from the credit union and buying the latest spec laptop from a proper shop.

Lidl do the Targa model but haven't produced any offers lately. Aldi do Medion which is the model referred to in this thread
