The BBC has over 30 radio stations, although it's main statinos, ( as opposed to local radio) doesn't work the say way RTE works.

RTE have a policy of building their schedules around a few people whom the rely on for talent. hence Pat kenny, marian Finucane, Ryan Turbidy, Joe DUffy ( the thought of Joe Duffy being considered "talent" often amuses many of us).

Incidentally, the effect is the "talent" has much more sway on RTE than any one individual would have on the BBC, which is why in RTE the "talent" ends up working around 35 weeks out of 52, and get paid enormous sums compared to their equivalents on the BBC.

The BBC does not rely of individuals to be their talent, but replies on a much broader spectrum of presenters to give a much wider range or programmes.

Don't know if I would entirely agree with that, when both J. Ross and T. Wogan were mainstays of BBC Radio. (And J. Ross only had a weekend show).

And the OP wasn't suggesting a similar presenter to Pat Kenny but rather a show similar to Pat Kenny's.

I wouldn't agree either, some of the DJs on BBC Radio 1 get paid an awful lot of dosh and the BBC relied for years on the likes of Wogan, Jimmy Young etc. so they were knee deep in celebrity presenters just the same as RTE is now.

To answer the OP's question, there isn't an exact equivalent to Pat Kenny on the BBC because RTE tends to be a bit more mixed in terms of content. Pat Kenny goes through several stories on each programme and he plays a few tunes. On the BBC there would be either music and light chat (Radio 2) or just serious stories (Radio 4), not a mix of both.

Radio 5 live generally would probably be equivalent, topical news related, opinion based programming but not that in depth?

But it's almost wall to wall sport so hardly a valid comparison.

Simon Mayo's now defunct show on Radio 5 live would have had a similiar mix of current affairs and culture. I haven't listen listened to his replacement or his new show on Radio 2.

The nearest is Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 mixed with the Today programme on Radio 4.

Rhod Sharp's Up all Night on 5 would come close(ish). But even then quite a distance from Kenny's show's full format.

Womans Hour on Radio 4 perhaps? ;)

Both now retired, and Ross is also gone. Who has replaced them to be the new "personalities"?

bbc radio4 at 12pm have a program called you & yours, it deals with a range of isssues, consumer stuff etc etc, may be worth a listen. It has a couple of different presenters.
Check out the shows web site on the bbc radio web site.
