Best Public Course in Dublin

I didn't want to hijack the Sillogue thread but what do you people feel is the best public golf course in Dublin? The closure of the club within Sillogue certainly has created a lot of sympathy and quite rightly so. I must say I’m not a massive fan of the one public course I played but they do serve a purpose and cater for a certain type golfer at extremely affordable prices.

I suppose the choices are: (Please mention others if I left them out)

    - Elmgreen
    - Sillogue
    - Corballis
    - Grange Castle

& maybe at a push Swords Open (Not sure if that is classified as a public course)

Of those, I'd say Grange Castle is the best, atlhough I'm not sure if 'public course' is a valid description anymore. Pretty much every course in Ireland is public now and accepts green fees most days. In fact it can be harder to get out in say Grange Castle on a Saturday than a lot of 'private' courses.

Newer 'private' course especially are just public course with members. You could get out tomorrow at Hollystown, Roganstown, Castleknock, St. Margarets, Howth, Donabate, Citywest etc.

Now im not saying its great course by any means but Deer Park is not as bad as I taught it be when I played it.

The thing that annoyed me though is that there was about two other holes not replaced on each green. Christ ya think they get equipment by now

Corballis for me. Well, as said before.. the first 12 holes at least.

Hollystown in Dub 15 is a public course isn't it?

    +1 for Corballis.

Some great holes (some not so), particularly the 3rd which is one of the best par 4's you will find anywhere.

Yeah, I'd say it is pretty much, although private owned.

Must get out and play Corballis soon, its seems short but I'm sure its tight and tricky.

I think hole 13 at corballis would have to be included too. Short but excellent par 3. Id never get sick of playing it.

Corballis all day for me too

That 3rd hole is a monster, one of the tougest par 4s around

I'd have to go for Corballis. It's been a while since I played it [used to live in the area some years ago ] and have to agree that the 3rd is a teriffic hole. I've played alot of links and that hole wouldn't be out of place on the best of them.

3rd hole is beaut, really something special.

I love the collection of par 3's at Corballis. All very different in style and approach. Only 1 of them was a shocker, I think it's played beside The Dunes pub. Not a big fan of 17 only because I always struggled on it :pac:

Haven't played Corballis in maybe 5 years or so, have to get out there soon.

Btw has the course changed at all over the last 5 years, does anyone know?

Does anyone know how much corballis is? I can't find it on the actually website. Thanks

Some big changes: The holes at the far end (near the hotel) have gone, and have been replaced by four new holes designed by Ron Kirby. They're holes 4 to 7, and they're superb (photos of 4, 5 and 7 are here). I agree that the 3rd hole is worthy of any links, but so are the new holes - 5 and 7 particularly. You should get back there and check them out.

I certainly will get out there again in the near future.

The pictures of the new holes look suberb got to say. Bit disapointed they got rid of the old par 3, 4th hole. But oh well, at least the holes beside the Dunes is gone which is a massive positive.

Finally played the new holes, the two par 3's are a flick of a sand wedge, pretty weak in my opinion. The first of the par 4's is a decent hole, I
managed to drive the second one, it's a risk/reward hole, not bad though.

Have to say I like the course, quirks and all.
