    Hey People,

Just wondering does anyone know much about the northern lights?

Im off to Oslo this weekend next month and would be a great expierence to see the northern lights. I 'd Love to get some pictures .

Do they only usually occur during high solar activity,
Or is it a more complex than that?

    Thanks in advanced.

The aurora are basically always there. As the magnetospere is distorted by the solar wind the latitude they can be seen at changes. If you want to see the current extent goto http://spaceweather.com/. I suspect that Oslo isn't far enough north for them to be apparent every night. But it has to be something to go look for.
As for taking pictures I've never tried. There are probably plent of sites on the net that could offer advice.

Good luck and enjoy the trip
