When I walk by homeless men on the street with their dogs I can't help but feel more concerned about the welfare of the dog than the man.

    Anyone else have similar feelings?

Yes, and it's natural. People are responsible for their lives, animals only have what we give them.

I felt similarly once - it was after I went in for a heart transplant & they forgot to replace the old one.

No not really. It restores some faith in humanity for me actually.

Why would you feel sorry for the dog? There's plenty of people in houses with pets that are more neglected than that

I always think, ' now why should I be giving him money for food when clearly he can eat the dog'?

    No.

The joke was much better when Chris Rock told it.

This cat rides alone on his toboggan!

No. We have to be careful about transferring human emotions onto animals.

Dogs don't understand homelessness, hopelessness, stigma or loss of integrity. They do not have human intelligence nor the range of emotions we are subjected to. They can live comfortably out of doors given some sort of shelter and basic feeding, and often do so in regular households including my own.

So no, I feel more sorry for the people sleeping in doorways in the cold tonight than any dog, cat or bird.

I always feel really guilty about feeling more sorry for the dag than the human. I've never seen a dog that looks hungry though.

All the charities I donate are animal ones, I figure there are enough normal people who give to "people" charities!!!

Doesn't mean the dog on the street isn't suffering?

At least there are charities for the likes of dogs and cats. What about the poor ants and bees?

Do you think the dog suffers from status anxiety?

The homeless who have dogs love them more than people who live in houses with their pets. The majority of them share their food with them .They are their truly best friends.
The Dog whisper said homeless people have the most stable dogs around.
I dont feel sorry for the dogs. And you should feel sorry for most of the people who end up like that.

Now in the countries where they eat dogs and pack them like tuna in cages then you feel sorry for them :(

They get extra on the 'social' for the dog.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,840 ✭✭✭Luno

Don't like how you see some fellas and they use the dog for sympathy but I do think some genuinely do see them as a companion when there is no one else out there to care about them the dog stays by their side!
Goes to say a dog really is a mans best friend.

While this isn't true for dogs, the most worrying thing is that, for begging parents, it is true for children. It's the kids who you see lying in their parents arms outisde the central bank when they should be in school that I pity.
