How to get access to a CBT counsellor in Dublin

Firstly some background. just under 5 years ago I had to leave my job. It was a new job, i was not very experienced and my manager bullied, picked on me and made me feel completely useless. This lead to me going home for 6 months and getting CBT councelling.

I got CBT councelling easily as i was in a nasty state( anxiety all the time, cramps, not sleeping, not eating, etc etc)

CBT helped me more than i could have hoped and i have been functioning brilliantly in a job for the last 4 years.

In a month or two i could be moving from my current job to a new position. My current job provides very little challenge or room for growth now, and the new position would provide loads of room for growth and learning new things.

The problem is the new job is quite high pressure. I would love to take the job, but thinking about it already makes me feel sick and my stomach cramp up.

I dont want my anxiety to hold me back, and i have been advised that i should go for the new job, but ensure i have a support system in place to help me through the first month or two.

As im not currently suffering from very much anxiety i cannot be referred by a doctor to a CBT councellor. As far as i am aware, you need to be referred to a CBT councellor by a doctor.

Can anyone advise of a way of getting in touch with a CBT councellor who can help me through the first (worst) months of the new job?

    Thanks all.

You don't need to be referred by a doctor. Find a CBT therapist on the psychologists ireland website and book a session. Regardless you can still go to your doctor and ask him for a referral, there are no requirements, he's not going to say no.

Hi OP, you don't need a referral to see a CBT. You can just pick a name from the book/online and make an appointment. However, as the other poster said, the doctor is unlikely to refuse you, and might be able to make a good recommendation for you.

I'd give you my CBT's contact info, but I'm not sure how I feel about her yet, and she may not be local to you. However, I just found her online. Just be sure to make sure they're properly qualified. ;)
