paying daughters rent can i claim tax back

    Hi all hope i have posted in the right forum, looking for a bit of advice,
    Daughter started college in Sept moved to Limerick to study now i was not eligable for a grant, so i pay her rent so the question is can i claim tax back on this, i rang Galway Tax office and the customer service operator told me no and that was it, so is this right? :(

    He's right i'm afraid. You can only claim rent relief on property you are actually living in yourself. This has been asked before on here, and i've linked to the specific section of the Taxes Consolidation Act dealing with rent relief on that thread.
