Im just gona buy the 120gig slim this weekend. Does anyone know how I can transfer my old game save data to the new PS3 bearing in mind my 60gig doesnt even turn on.

When you get your new PS3, swap the hard drives. Turn on the slim with 60gig inside it. Copy the saves onto a USB stick. Put the 120 drive back in the slim and copy the saves from the USB stick.

The PS3 manual or youtube shows how to swap hard drives.

Does that work, I heard it wouldn't!

I thought that the hard drive of the ps3 will only work on its original ps3 and not another one!

It does as far as I know, havent actually done this myself.

I know that some game saves are not copyable though.

If the harddrive transfare does not work you should be able to pick up a cheap 2.5'' 5400rpm drive online.

    It doesn't work!!!

I did this with my own one. Every HD is set for use with a specific machine. When you put the old one into the new machine you will have to format it, deleting everything on it

What you could try is getting a portable hard drive, take out the HD that it comes with and put in your 60GB one and then transfer it all over that way.

The only way you're getting your save data off that ps3 is to repair it, then you have two choices. Ethernet the two consoles together and you retain everything from the first console, or copy all the non copy-protected saves to a memory card and transfer them to the new console.

Id get it fixed for the €160, get your game saves with the game save utility.
Then trade in for a slim

Has the 60 had its board reflowed already, or was it a replacement from sony?
If its a replacement, you can probably get a temporary fix for a lot less than 160 euro. It may not last long but it'll allow you to get your saves off it.

If you do the back up/ restore procedure yes your saves will be transfered over to your new slim. This is the only method to transfer those copy prohibited saves. I recommend to everyone to have an external hdd to back up your data at least once a month.

Defo agree with the back up every month. Ive learned the hard way.

This won't transfer copy protected saves from one ps3 to another, the backup option is only designed to backup all data onto the same ps3.
The only way to move copy protected saves to a different ps3 is to have both ps3's hooked up via ethernet cable and use the transfer option (new in 3.15), this transfers everything to a new ps3.
