Er, I wouldn't exactly say it's good for you.
And you've got it a little arseways; they DO contain nicotene, but do not produce smoke. They emit a water vapour, afaik.

Don't think they're legal over here, unfortunately.

huh, coincidentally a blog I follow, www.sciencebasedmedicine.org , has posted about this today. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but here ya go:
    e-Cigarette Safety

Ever since news of the harmful effects of tobacco smoke hit the public consciousess around the middle of the 20th century the tobacco industry and others have been looking for a “healthy” alternative. Are e-cigarettes just latest in a list of failed attempts to make smoking safe?

In case you are a new visitor to our planet (welcome) using tobacco products has been determined to be a significant risk factor in developing certain kinds of lung cancer and vascular disease, including strokes and heart attacks (the top three killers). The tobacco industry initially tried desperately to deny or downplay the scientific evidence for the health risks of smoking, engaging in a campaign of doubt and confusion, but those efforts ultimately failed.

Some companies marketed light, low tar, and filtered cigarettes with the claim, direct or implied, that they were a more healthful alternative to regular cigarettes. However, there has never been convincing evidence that such cigarettes are less of a health risk. Still, the marketing stuck and now 90% of all cigarettes sold are filtered.

Another alternative marketed as less of a health risk is Asian herbal cigarettes – marketed mainly in Asia where smoking is on the rise. However, here too evidence is lacking for reduced risk compared to tobacco. Smokers may just be trading one set of carcinogens for another.

All of these products raise concerns that they will keep people smoking under the false hope that they are at less risk of adverse health consequences. The optimal outcome for public health is to reduce the number of people smoking at all.

The latest player in this game of “safe smoking” is the e-cigarette. This is a battery operated cigarette-shaped tube that provides a nicotine vapor when inhaled. The goal is provide smokers with their nicotine fix (nicotine is the primary addictive substance in tobacco) without all the carcinogens and carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke.

The problem, again, is that the marketing may be getting ahead of the evidence. The British Medical Journal recently reported that there is insufficient evidence to justify any claims for reduced risk from e-cigarettes.

The concept itself is plausible – e-cigarettes may be considered just another nicotine delivery system, no different than nicotine gum or the patch. But it is a unique delivery system that needs to be investigated. For example, the BMJ reports that there may be chemical contaminants in the vapor that contain some fo the same carcinogens as in tobacco smoke, although in lower amounts. Also the dose and route of entry of nicotine may have unanticipated health risks.

There are two claims for e-cigarettes that need to be investigated: do they help people quit smoking, and what is their overall health risk. Neither question has been adequately answered with scientific research.

Regulators in different countries are taking slightly different approaches to the problem. Some feel that e-cigarettes are probably safer than smoking tobacco, and therefore should not be discouraged as an alternative. Others simply choose to warn the public that the data is not in, so consumers should exercise caution.

But once again there is the fear that belief in the safety (relative or absolute) of e-cigarettes may keep people consuming nicotine and even smoking longer.

Only one thing is clear at this point – rational public policy on such issues needs to be informed by scientific evidence, which is currently lacking.

seems most people are still cautious about e-cigarette.
It is difficule to open a new market. situation may be changed few years later when it is recognised by us all.

I've no objection to E or cigarettes - I just don't think that some things should be combined.

In theory sounds liek a good idea. Its just I wouldn't be hugely shocked if the concentrated nicotine hit might have a worse effect on the lung tissue and maybe even makes you more prone to cancer.

Not saying I even believe that's possible. Just some research needs to be done!

Have a few questions for users:

Do your lungs feel healthier(is your stamina improved? can you take deeper breaths)? Is heartburn reduced? Do you feel like you have more energy?

I tried several brands and types of these e-cigs about a year ago. Whilst they are convenient for getting your nicotine hit on flights and such they haven't replaced my 'proper' and traditional nicotine delivery method.

A word of caution, it's rather easy to overdose on nicotine when using the e-cigs - not a pleasant experience.

no man ive completely switched from standard cigarettes to e-cigarettes, and they give me the same nicotine hit. I have been on them since b4 christmas. i would definitely recommend them to anyone who is trying to quit.

Most of the smokers in my office are on the e-fags now. Some would have been very heavy smokers who moved over pretty easily and all of them barely touch the e-fag now.
    It's definitely worth a go

I was a proper chain smoker for the last 10 years of 30 on the fags and heard about these e-cigs but as a lot of people do - I thought it was a gimmick until I started reading “Mewso’s” thread which started around the same time as this one did,

I only found Mewso’s thread 3 months ago and followed it as the more I read the most convinced I got that these things might help me to at least cut down on my smoking which was really affecting my health,
It got to the stage where I had to have a spittoon alongside my bed because of the amount of coughing I did during the night… I really felt my chest was done for,

The lads on the thread kept talking about throat hit just like a real fag… so about 8 weeks ago I went and ordered a starter kit for €45 and a bottle of juice for €10 from an Irish site, 2 days later it came as I cooked breakfast and I had a go off of it… I couldn’t believe the belt it gave me and after the second or third drag on it I knew I found the thing I needed to take the place of the fags,

The one I got first was the Riva ego - only reason I went for this is I found a few of the lads say the 510 atomizer worked real well and now I have to agree with them… I smoked very few real fags the first week but only smoked one in the last seven weeks and that was to put my mind at rest because I kept thinking that there was something missing when vapeing on the e-cig so I lit a real fag and took a few good drags and by god lads it was horrible it left a taste in my mouth as if I smoked a newspaper and chewed the tobacco,

I have since ordered around 12 of these for family and friends that were surprised to hear that I finally found something to stop me smoking after trying everything I could get my hands on to stop in the past… they knew if it worked on me it would surely help them as well,

My own mother still cant get over the fact that I’m off the real thing… every other day she asks how many fags I smoked or words to that effect,

The lads on the thread will fill you in on where to go and what to get and there are loads of videos on you tube that let you know how to clean the e-cig and how to get the best out of them, link to thread below,

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=63958234

I have 2 on the go at the moment - one Camel flavour and the other is spearmint and I enjoy both flavours,

Forgot to add that I got rid of the spittoon in less than 3 weeks and I feel great thank Buda and Mewso

You could be right about some but not in my case.. I’m just so happy to be able to take a deep breath without coughing my lung up that I have spent a lot of time telling my mates “some of it fell on deaf ears” but I convinced a few to try one of my spare e-cigs for a day while others just had a couple of pulls on it before getting a kit for themselves,

Even a guy that came to fix my satellite dish had a go on one and after a couple of drags went and got one,

They may not do the trick for everyone but I just cant get over the fact that I’m still getting my nicotine fix without the 10,000 or so carcinogens that you inhale every time you spark up a fag,

I can sit in the pubs here and blast away… I ordered one for the gaffer in one pub and the barman in another,

Its well worth reading Mewso thread from the start, I normally go straight to the last page in threads but I’m happy I stuck with this one from day one as it gets kinda side tracked as you go on but still loads of good info along the way,

I have nothing to do with any of the sites that sell this gear and I order from China / UK and Irish sites for anything I need concerning e-cigs,

In my mind this thing is the best replacement for cigarettes and it tastes so good,

A word of warning about the batteries, my mate who got his about a week after I started had the habit of standing his e-cig upright on the edge of tables and I tried to tell him he might damage it if/when it fell over…. He came around today to tell me his 2 batteries had died an awful death,

He said he left the first one fall and when he picked it up and started to vape on it - it started to get really hot so he took off the atomizer but it seemed to be getting hotter… he put it outside in case it caught fire then he put the same atomizer onto another battery this also heated up so much that the little rubber button started to go like jelly so he dumped that as well,

It didn’t put him off because he got me to order another of the same tonight, I think he has learnt his lesson about lithium batteries .
