The screen on my old laptop (it's about 7 years old) has died and I'm currently using an old 15'' monitor, would this monitor be wasted on it?

    Wasted in what way?
Specs look decent, you can't go too far wrong.

I mean would the graphics card in the laptop be up to date enough to compliment the monitor? I'll add the spec of the laptop when I get home.

Is a 7 year old laptop not a waste of time?

Is running really well at the moment, last year I reinstalled windows xp and added an extra 512mb of RAM. Meets all my needs as a "desktop" at the moment, if I would use the above screen with it then I'd be very very happy.

Yeah, it will be fine - the monitor has a VGA input.
It just won't make full use of the monitor's max resolution.

-edit- @EI111 - nothing wrong with a 7yo laptop, why replace something that works?

It'll run at a low resolution, but such a big screen and low resolution could look odd. But it's still a decent price, and you'd get use out of it long after the laptop dies.

But it could be worth considering a new laptop, fair enough, if it's running fine now, but at 7 years old it is getting old and by the sounds of things starting to fail. It could be an idea to use the money for a screen to put towards a new lappy.

I have a samsung NC10 so I wanted to set up the old laptop as my desktop and when it dies replace it with a tower, that's why I want the good monitor.

How easy is it to replace the graphics card in a laptop?

It's not doable in most cases, unless the laptop is high end.

Seeing your plan, the new screen sounds like a good idea so:)
