Cats eyes

Following a recent thread (can't find it, maybe mod can merge) on cats eyes and their lack of maintenance.....Whilst visiting home over xmas I drove the M1 southbound and noticed the total lack of functioning cats eyes.

I emailed the NRA with a general query about cats eye maintenance regimes etc. and got no response, so emailed again and got this back:
    Dear Mr. Murphy

Thank you for your email of 2 January 2010 regarding the above.

I wish to advise that the cats eyes on the Northern Motorway which is the section from Monasterboice (Jct 11) to Gormanstown (Jct 7) will be replaced by the end of the first quarter.

I hope this is of assistance.

    Kind regards

    name removed

Now, fair play to her for getting back to me and I'm glad they'll be sorting the cats eyes along this particular stretch , but it was a general query, given the shocking state of many cats eyes in ireland. I'll get back onto her about it....I believe the NRA has no cats eye maintenance policy tbh, and rely to much on emails like mine telling them that road x has no working cats eyes. It shouldn't be like that.

What's the lifespan on the ones the NRA use?

The cats eyes on the M1 are in much better nick than on the A1 or even the NI M1, which was missing cats eyes on the hard shoulder for much of the section to Sprucefield at Christmas.

    murphaph:

As far as I can tell, even things like fixing the tensioned barriers is reactive (or any proactive measure is over such a long period as to be irrelevant).

Also ESB seem to deal with dodgy streetlights on the same basis.

Of course we could harass the authorities a bit more given that there do seem to be many issues that a simple email suffices for getting the issue rectified, but it does seem to be doing someone else's job for them.

Airtricity took over the street lights at the end of last year, but I doubt they will be any more proactive on it.
