Any experience changing speakers in 08 Honda Accord?

    Hi All,

After muck looking and loads of helpful advice on the cars I was looking at from people on boards (thank you it is much appreciated) I have finally decided on a 08 Honda Accord.

The car is great for my needs and came with a 2 year comprehensive warranty from the dealer which was the final selling point for me.

I would love however to upgrade the speakers for the car as the sounds is not as good in it as in my old car. I am not into bass boxes in the boot or sparkly neon head units but I would prefer a better sound.

My question is does anyone have experience or know who I could ask about this? The head unit will be remeaining as the climate control is built into is and I do not want to change the look of the car. What i would like to do is change the existing speakers with better ones. I am interested in the following:

    1. Is the standard head unit capable enough to power better speakers?
    2. Would it require a small amp to power better speakers?
    3. If 2 is a yes is it a mission to try and get to the back of the stereo to hook this up?

I am not adverse to paying someone to do this but would prefer to have a go myself if removing the door panels/getting to the back of the head unit was not too complicated.

Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

Is there anyone that could even point me in the right direction? I can't really find the info I'm looking for online and don't know of any reputable places to go and ask.

I'm not overly confident about getting the correct answers I need from Halfords.

if its just to better the sound,, get a better set of speakers and a nice cd head unit.

will be easy for you to fit

would be great if it where that simple as I have done this plenty of times in the past.

The problem is that the head unit is integrated into the dash and the climate control knobs are both built into the same unit as the stereo.

Because of this I do not know what output wattage the stereo has which is why I was enquiring about if an amp was needed or not.

The other problem is it looks to me like most of the dash would need to come out if an amp was needed because of the output wattage so my question still stands.

Anybody have any experience doing this in an accord or know of someone that has?

Firstly change your speakers to the best you can afford.

The existing radio should have more than enough grunt to drive new speakers so you should have no problems. Most car radio's output around 10W RMS per channel. Always ignore the PMPO and other maximum ratings, they mean nothing, always go with RMS

Unfortunately car manufacturers dont include a decent speaker enclosures to maximize the bass from the speakers. So your only option then is to add a small woofer to the boot with an internal/seperate amplifier.

thanks for the link. Will give it a good look over when I have a bit mroe time.

10W per channel doesnt sound like a whole pile. If I remember correctly my old stereo had 5oWX4. Which was probably overkill to the other extreme for what I needed. Is 10W really enough for a half decent sound?

Hopefully that link will also show how to get at the speakers in the doors. In my old car the grill simply popped off but I'm after looking at the accord and it looks to me like the whole inside of the door will need to be removed!

50W x 4 is the PMPO (Peak maximum power output) if the sound was a pure sine wave and the voltage was 16Volts etc etc. This is useless information for real day to day life.

RMS (Root mean squared) is a much better guide and better rule of thumb.

Go look at a box of speakers from eg Pioneer and they will say eg 200W max and in tiny small print somewhere 30Wrms
