Recording Irish Tenor Banjo...

    Hi folks,

Though I post a bit in the Music Production forum, I figured I'd put this here. I'm looking for ways to mic an Irish tenor banjo as I've had little success in the past. I've tried mic'ing it like a guitar with a large diaphagm condensor mic, or using a small diaphragm condensor pointed down the neck - this yielded what was perhaps the best result, but it still sounded quite tinny, nasally, and much too ambient.

Any of you 'live' players out there have any tips? Piezo mic into a pre-amp like a semi-acoustic guitar? Different approach to mic'ing?
