The OH wants to apply for a job in a different department in work.
The advertised salary is less than what she currently earns but is not signifigantly so. She is wondering what the story is with the salary and internal transfers, will she have to take the lower salary (if she is offered the position) or can her employers do that?

oF course they can pay a lower salary, she will be applying for a different job no doubt with a new contract

Generally you can negotiate to keep the same salary.

It depends really, is the other position more junior or one of less responsibility? In that case, I can't see them letting her keep her current salary.

If it's just a different sector and the advertised salary is lower than your OH's because the job can now be filled more cheaply there shouldn't be a problem as her replacement would no doubt be cheaper too...
