So much for being a top rate university.

The peak b/w I can get is like 1000k/sec. Laughable. And then there's the throttling... Joke is the word.

Don't get me started on the ridiculous security policy ISS seem to justify their existance with.

I studied in the UK before I came here and all I can say is your network is a pile of ****e!

Compared to similarly ranked universities, our network is in tatters.

I ended up having to download a "large" (by 1999 standards anyway) dataset at home today over a 3 MB connection.

ISS is far too restrictive. Their backwards policies is why CS operate their own network.

I'd say it's more about justifying their jobs. They're a bunch of overpaid fat wasters as far as I can see. The IT budget in the college is massive, yet we get sweet FA in return.

The college should just tell all undergraduates to feck off and buy their own laptop and shut down all the useless "computer rooms". The amount of time/money that is spent maintaining these machines must be colossal.

When I was there I thought the cs network was even worse to be honest. Absolutely crap - in the computer science department of all places.

That's because the administrative overlords that are "ISS" have the power to dictate to academic departments on the proxy server they must use. (i.e. all traffic *must* be routed through the college proxy server which is a crock of ****).

Interesting point, I wonder how much is spent on the administration of these computer rooms. Surely all students have their own computer and printer.

For all the free education that the poor undergraduates are getting under the socialist regime, you'd think the least they could do would be to fork up €500 for a laptop and printer.

...and what if they can't afford to?

Also, it's hardly "free" with a 1,500 Euro registration fee each year.

Not all students need computers just for facebook/gmail/word. Some subjects require proprietary software or software that is time consuming/difficult to install. There are ways around this of course but college has an obligation to provide these materials to the students. They can't really condone torrenting pirated material etc...

Are you not just talking about COMPSCIwireless? There's a lot more to a network than the Wifi access points it provides

Wrong. CS operates its own proxy.

    hhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm

I had close relations with iss in tcd for a while, and like most things in tcd, it sucks the fat one

Trinity should outsource their whole network to an external professional vendor and save massive massive money

Base salary for an attendent in iss starts at 30,000  (he puts the paper in the printer)

the helpdesk has a mix of programmers  (in title only, they couldnt mix ready break) right up to network administrators, salaries of 35,000 to 57,000  ................... i could go on, and thats just the start off it

    http://peoplefinder.tcd.ie/pls/peoplefinder/telephone_system_pub.people_finder.dept?p_dept=961

look at the staff list and job titles this dept has created, have a look at the pay scales on the staff office website..................... criminal, overpaid waisters the majority of them

Which is even worse than proxyA/B.tcd.ie when it comes to capping download rates and throttling your download.

    Wrong.

CS only appear to operate their own proxy. They merely connect to the ISS proxy at a much high level which facilitates them dictating their own access policy. Try getting permission to do something unusual and you will be required to make an application to both ISS and CS.

What speeds are you expecting to be able to get? I consistently get 10mbps which is reasonable considering the back haul to the office is only 100mbps and the building gigabit. If you really need to download something fast, go to one of the electronic departments computers, everything was upgraded to gigabit ethenet and 10 gigabit backhaul a while ago.

Smell of troll in this thread.

Anyway, I do think they seem to serve their own self-preservation first and foremost. I can't blame them, but the fact that their incompetency seems to be unseen by anyone except the end users is pretty annoying. The majority of staff and students are ignorant to how better the services could be run, and the CS dept have some limited separate facilities which may or may not make it better, I won't speak for them.

The shambles that the NAC is, well I'll say no more on that. Student network access is entirely in the hands of some contracted american company. IS Services need to wait to test Windows 7 before allowing it on the network? I call bull. They need to wait for Bradford Networks to fix up the compatibility, as if they had any real issues with windows 7, it would not be allowed indefinitely on the network IMO.

The ethernet connections to the NAC involve some crazy IP address changeover thing before a PC gets access to the proxy server, while the more widely used (and abused) TCDwifi NAC has no such "security" setup. The NAC changeover thing for student residences broke down several times over my time using it, and then how can I forget when the microwave link in Halls broke down in May 08... It took them about 4 weeks, right up to exams to get the damn thing "fixed".

    Apologies for my own rant:pac:
