George Lucas has admitted that he is getting closer to making 3D versions of his Star Wars movies.

Speaking to Access Hollywood at Sunday's Golden Globes, the filmmaker confessed that James Cameron's use of pioneering 3D technology on Avatar is spurring him on to create new versions of his two Star Wars trilogies.

"I liked it," Lucas said regarding Cameron's record-breaking blockbuster. "I make movies like that, [so] I can appreciate what he went through to do it. [I'm] happy it's so successful, and worked very well in 3D. haven't been a big fan of 3D, but that movie definitely improves in 3D."

Lucas, who is currently working on World War II drama Red Tails, added that he has been considering a 3D re-release of his space saga for several years.

"We've been looking for years and years and years at trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3D," he explained. "But the technology hasn't been there. We've been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen."

    This could be sooooo bad!!!!

Eh, i'm a star wars whore so i'd probably at least check out A New Hope 3D. I hope the 3D used is better than Avatar's anyway. I mean it was very good --better than every other 3D film I've ever seen--but it's not perfect 3D.

Anyway the film is still amazing so it'll be a great experience no matter what he does...unless he takes out the blasters and puts in walkie-talkies...

Part of me hates the constant whoring of Star Wars, Lucas needs to find something else to do, but a bigger part of me really, really wants to see the Death Star trench run in 3D...

Screw that Lucas, do American Graffiti in 3D! Seriously, that fella needs to stop flogging a dead horse and come up with a new film or saga or anything.

As long as it keeps him away from Indy, I'm fine with him doing whatever the hell he wants.

Milk the hell out of it!!
I'll go see A New Hope in 3D 10+ times if it's released. The others I'll only go to a few times each, I'm not that crazy. :D

Imagine Jar Jar's ears flopping out AT you, or being so so close to Carrie Fisher's hair buns, drool..

Well keep dreaming, cus Star Wars wil never look as good as Avatar in 3D. Avatar was shot using a live action 3D camera. Star Wars will be put through a post 3D process (obviously) in the same vein as Alice in Wonderland. So it will be bad 3D.

He should focus on getting Indiana Jones back on track after the last effort.

Fcuk 3D in the ear. I'm blind in one eye and don't get the full benefit. This better not be the future of cinema whereby everything is in 3D.

Ah but u haven't counted on Lucas adding new scenes with Jar-Jar jumping out at you....and those little deformed chickens that appear in Mos Eisley :D

Can you name other 'post-3d' films so i have an idea of what to expect? I dunno, if you throw 50 million at it I'm sure someone can cut-out actors and try to make it more 3d...

Kind of an obvious question but how do you "make" a movie 3d that was intended to be 2d (esp wrt to live action stuff)? I could understand them tweaking the code in ToyStory to make it 3d but what's the deal for SW? Will they be re-doing more model shots with CG (like they did in 1997) and making them 3d to boot .... but then leaving all the live action stuff exactly the same as before?

Avatar was the first film to be shot using a 3D camera (and at this point looks the best). Therefore all other 3d films, however you should discount and CGI movies (Up, toy story, etc) as these are in a digital format to begin with and lend themselves to the 3D process very well. Althought i haven't seen all of these here are a few.

    Spy kids
    My bloody valentine
    Nightmare before Xmas

There are a few coming up aswell, but Avatar is the benchmark for 3D and will be till camerons next i'd say.

Jar jar juming out is a scary thought unless I can punch him!:D

Don't know if 50 Mill will be enough as they threw 500 mill at Avatar, and that didn't make you happy:p

Read up on wiki about 3D and all will be clear. In a nutshell they basically take the image a repoduce it four times on screen and restrict light and BOOM 3D. That is a really small nutshell, but all of star wars will be in 3D. It just won't have a s grat of depth as with Avatar. If you saw Avatar, surly you saw the Alice in wonderland Trailer before, thats what it will be like, which in my opnion is poor. Avatar blew my mind though
